Mango for PCOS: An Unexpectedly Delicious Solution - AlphonsoMango.in

Mangoes can fit into a PCOS diet for many people, but portion size and what you eat them with matter. Mango is a sweet fruit with fibre, and no food treats PCOS, so ask your doctor or dietitian how much mango suits you.

Can you eat mango with PCOS?

For many people with PCOS, a modest serving of mango can be part of a balanced diet. There is no list of foods that cure or treat PCOS, and we are not a clinic. We are a mango seller, and we get this question often. What follows is general nutrition information, written to help you have a better conversation with your own doctor or dietitian.

The common worry is sugar. Mango is a sweet fruit, with about 13.7 g of sugars per 100 g. It also has fibre and water, and it comes with vitamin C and folate. Whether a serving works for you depends on your own health, your medicines and the rest of your meal. If you want the technical detail, read our pages on the glycemic index of mango and on mango and diabetes.

PCOS and diet in brief

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal condition in women of reproductive age. It can involve irregular periods and raised androgen levels, and many women with PCOS also have insulin resistance, which is one reason diet comes up so often. Management is usually a mix of food, movement, sleep and, where needed, medical treatment, planned with a clinician.

Fruit is rarely the villain in that picture. Most dietitians talk about the overall pattern: plenty of vegetables and whole grains, enough protein and fibre, and less refined sugar and sugary drinks. Whole fruit is generally treated differently from juice, because the fibre stays in the fruit. Your own plan might differ, and that is a matter for your care team, not a web page.

What is in mango

These figures are for 100 g of raw mango, from the nutrition table on Wikipedia, which lists USDA-style values. They describe mango in general, not Alphonso alone, and they are not a recommended portion. For scale, a whole Alphonso generally weighs 150 to 300 g including skin and stone, so the flesh in one fruit is less than its full weight.

Raw mango, per 100 g (approximate)
Item Amount
Energy about 60 kcal
Carbohydrate about 15 g, of which sugars about 13.7 g
Dietary fibre about 1.6 g
Protein about 0.82 g
Fat about 0.38 g
Vitamin C about 36.4 mg (roughly 40% of the Daily Value)
Folate about 43 mcg (roughly 11% of the Daily Value)
Potassium about 168 mg

The pattern to notice is a sweet, low-protein fruit with a modest amount of fibre. That is why people often pair mango with something that has protein, such as curd. It is also why a large bowl at once is not the same as a few cubes. If you want the bigger nutrition picture, our mango nutrition facts has more.

Ways to include mango

These are habits many dietitians suggest for fruit in general. They are not a prescription:

  • Choose whole fruit over juice. Juice and sweetened aamras remove the fibre or add sugar.
  • Keep the serving modest and eat it as part of a meal or snack that also has protein, such as curd, nuts or seeds.
  • Do not add sugar. Ripe Alphonso is sweet enough as it is.
  • Notice how you feel, and share your observations with your doctor, especially if you track your glucose.
  • Keep treats in context. A mango is a seasonal fruit, not an everyday pudding.

Questions for your dietitian

Instead of searching for a number, take these questions to your appointment:

  1. How much fruit a day suits me, and does mango count as one serving?
  2. Should I eat mango with a meal, as a snack, or not at all for now?
  3. Do my medicines or my blood tests change how I should eat fruit?
  4. How should I deal with festive sweets and seasonal fruit such as mango?
  5. Which other fruits fit my plan?

It also helps to keep a simple food diary for a week or two before the appointment: what you ate, when, and how you felt. That gives your dietitian far more to work with than any article can.

Please do not stop or change any treatment because of a food article. The right answer is personal.

Seeds that go with fruit

Flax seeds from AlphonsoMango.inRoasted flax seeds from AlphonsoMango.in

Some people top a bowl of fruit and curd with a spoon of seeds. We sell flax seeds, roasted flax seeds and chia seeds. Seeds add fibre and fat to a snack, but we make no claim that they treat PCOS or any condition, and they are a food, not a remedy. If you are unsure whether seeds suit you, ask your dietitian.

People also ask

Can PCOS eat mango?

Many people with PCOS include mango in modest portions, usually with other food, though the right amount is individual. Mango has about 13.7 g of sugars and 1.6 g of fibre per 100 g. No food treats PCOS, so ask your doctor or dietitian how much mango suits your plan and medicines.

Are mangoes good for PCOS?

Mango offers vitamin C, folate and fibre, but it is also a sweet fruit. Whether it is good for you depends on the serving size, what you eat it with and your own health. It is not a treatment for PCOS. Discuss fruit portions with a dietitian who knows your history.

Which fruits are PCOS friendly?

There is no official PCOS fruit list. Dietitians usually favour whole fruit over juice, a variety of fruit, and modest servings eaten with protein. Which fruits and how much suit you depends on your health and blood tests. Ask your doctor or dietitian instead of following a generic list.

Can I drink mango juice or aamras with PCOS?

Juice and sweetened aamras are the forms people most often worry about, because juice removes fibre and sweetened versions add sugar. Whole fruit eaten in a modest serving is generally treated differently. If you drink juice, ask your dietitian about a serving size that fits your plan.

What fruits should I not eat in PCOS?

No fruit is banned by a universal rule. The usual advice is to go easy on fruit juices, sweetened fruit drinks, and very large servings of sweet fruit, and to choose whole fruit instead. The right choices vary from person to person, so check with your doctor or dietitian.
