Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Mango?

Delivery Across India
From harvest in Ratnagiri or Devgad, fruit reaches the Mumbai packhouse by air-conditioned vehicle in about 10–12 hours. After 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening there, it dispatches by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.
Metro cities — Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Pune — typically receive the box in 20–24 hours from dispatch. Most other Indian cities receive it in 1–3 days. We service 15,000–17,000 pin codes.
The box itself does the heavy lifting. It is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box (130 gsm, alternate flute), with a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure, six air holes for airflow, and a hay bed with individual foam-net sleeves (flat width 50–55 mm) for every fruit. The foam net prevents lenticel blackening — Alphonso skin scars when rubbed — and stops latex from one fruit touching another.
Fruit dispatches at 70–80% ripeness. It reaches full ripeness within about three days of delivery. If a fruit arrives damaged or fails quality, photograph or video it and send us the evidence on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. No physical return is needed — we dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next order.

- We dispatch. Your order moves by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Most Indian cities receive delivery in 1–3 days from dispatch.
Where These Mangoes Come From
Prashant Powle sources from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri district and Sindhudurg district in Konkan, Maharashtra. On the Ratnagiri side: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet and others. On the Devgad (Sindhudurg) side: Devgad town itself, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Kunkeshwar and roughly 20 more villages whose orchards face the Arabian Sea.
The orchards are typically 12–25 years old. Partner farmers — 100+ families in total — follow cultivation SOPs that specify which natural sprays and fertilisers are used from flowering to harvest. The tree is never shaken at harvest. Fruit is hand-picked using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net so it never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera is used so the picker sees exactly what they are cutting.
How Every Mango Is Graded
At the Malvan or Devgad packing point, each fruit is weighed and sorted into the four weight grades. Then AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal issues — spongy tissue is the main one — and external deformities. Any fruit that fails does not reach the box. We assumed visual inspection alone was enough in our early seasons; the grading table proved otherwise, and we added machine scanning.
Independently tested by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 report found all 28 pesticide residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification. We do not describe the fruit as pesticide-free — one residue, thiamethoxam at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg, was detected within limits. Testing runs weekly through the season.
How We Ripen These Mangoes
Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is time on hay, monitored — not gas-triggered. After a controlled hot-water treatment post-harvest to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life, fruit is cooled at the packhouse before the air-conditioned vehicle journey to Mumbai.
Carbide-ripened mangoes feel uniformly soft within 24 hours and often have green patches that never develop colour. A naturally ripened Alphonso from Jamsande or Pawas turns saffron-yellow unevenly, smells of the fruit rather than chemicals, and holds its flavour once ripe. That is the difference buyers notice when they receive their first box from us.
Nutrition in a Ripe Alphonso
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a polyphenol concentrated in the pulp, has been studied for anti-inflammatory activity in cell models (Govindappa et al., 2011).
Alphonso puree from ripe fruit is used as a first fruit for babies from about six months — but treat that as a serving suggestion, not medical advice. Ask your paediatrician.
One honest note: mangoes are fruit, and fruit has sugar. The 18–24° Brix reading on a fully ripe Alphonso reflects natural fruit sugars, not added anything. If you are managing blood sugar closely, factor that in.
Season and Availability
The Alphonso season runs February to June, with the peak from March to May. Outside that window, fresh Alphonso mangoes are not available on this site — not from us, and not authentically from anywhere in Konkan. Any seller offering "Ratnagiri Alphonso" in August is either selling last season's cold-stored fruit or mislabelling a different variety.
Ratnagiri won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-level product award that reflects how seriously the region's output is regarded nationally. Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the seasonal yield pressures facing Alphonso growers that year.
We take pre-orders before the season opens. Pre-orders can be cancelled only before dispatch — once the fruit is packed and moving, it cannot be recalled.
What About Kesar Mangoes?
We also stock Gir Kesar mangoes, sourced from Junagadh, which holds GI Tag No. 185. Kesar has a different flavour profile — rounder sweetness, less fibre — and a slightly different season window. It is sold on the same site under its own product listing. See the Kesar mango page for current availability.
