Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Should You Choose?

Both carry GI Tag No. 139 and both are natural Hapus. The differences are real but subtle — enough that 46% of our customers reorder the same variety each season.

If you are buying for the first time, either is excellent. If you want the highest natural sugar density, Devgad fruit from villages like Kunkeshwar or Vijaydurg — sea-facing orchards 12–25 years old — tends to hit the upper Brix range more consistently mid-season.

Which grade should you pick?

We grade every fruit by weight before packing. Small runs 150–180 g, Medium 180–225 g, Extra Large 250–275 g, and Jumbo 275–300 g. For gifting — 18% of our orders are gifts — Extra Large or Jumbo boxes make the strongest impression. For daily eating, Medium works well and is typically the best value per kilogram.

Delivery Across India

Fruit goes from tree to our Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse in about two hours. Air-conditioned vehicles carry it to the Mumbai packhouse in 10–12 hours. After 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening there, we dispatch. Total time from harvest to dispatch: 48–72 hours.

We ship via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Metro cities typically receive delivery within 20–24 hours of dispatch. Most other cities get their order within 1–3 days. We reach 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes across India.

Every mango travels inside a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) seated on a hay/straw bed, in a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box with a 12-slot partition. The partition carries transit pressure — the fruit does not. Six air holes on the top and bottom face let ripening gases escape. Reinforced corners handle the drops that happen in every courier network.

We do not offer fresh Alphonso from July to January. That is the honest reality of a seasonal fruit. If someone promises you Hapus in October, ask where it was cold-stored and for how long.

How to Order

  1. Select your variety and grade. Choose Ratnagiri Alphonso (₹1849–₹5399) or Devgad Alphonso (₹1849–₹5499). Pick the weight grade — Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo — that suits your household size or gifting plan. Box options are half dozen, one dozen or two dozen.
  2. Add to cart and check out. Enter your delivery pin code at checkout to confirm serviceability. Payment options include UPI, cards and net banking.
  3. We dispatch and you track. After harvest and natural ripening, your order ships via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Delivery takes 1–3 days for most Indian cities. You receive a tracking link by SMS or email.

Where Our Mangoes Come From

Alphonso mango from Konkan villages — mango online buy from AlphonsoMango.in

We source from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — though our site says 48+ because not all are active in every season. In Ratnagiri taluka alone, that covers Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Mirya, Kalbadevi, Majgaon, Kasheli and Adi. In Devgad taluka, villages like Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Kunkeshwar and Girye supply fruit from orchards that sit close enough to the Arabian Sea to catch its humidity year-round.

Prashant Powle, who founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017, selects partner orchards on three criteria: consistent Brix across fruits in the same batch, trees old enough (12–25 years minimum) to have developed the root depth that concentrates flavour, and alternate-bearing management that prevents the farm from exhausting itself in a single heavy season. We work with 100+ partner farmer families. We do not name them publicly — that is their choice, not ours.

Every fruit is hand-harvested using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and a cutting blade. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole fitted with a camera gives the harvester visibility before cutting. This matters because bruised latex at the stem stains the skin black within hours and drives the spongy tissue fault that ruins texture.

What does the GI tag actually mean for mango?

GI Tag No. 139 covers Alphonso mangoes grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. The tag is not a quality grade — it is a geographical origin guarantee. It tells you the fruit came from a specific region with specific soil, rainfall and coastal conditions. A trader without authorised-user status cannot legally label their fruit as GI-tagged Alphonso. Our GI Registry Certificate No. 4163 was issued on 16 October 2019.

How We Ripen and Pack

After post-harvest cooling at the packhouse and the air-conditioned truck journey to Mumbai, every batch goes onto a hay bed in a temperature-controlled room. This is the Aadi method — traditional, slow, monitored. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours on hay is not decorative; it is the actual ripening event. Gas-ripened fruit ripens from the skin inward, unevenly. Hay-ripened fruit does the opposite.

Separately, every fruit passes through AI and ML-assisted machine scanning before packing. The scanner checks for internal faults (spongy tissue) and external deformities. What fails the scan does not leave our packhouse. We assumed visual grading alone caught most spongy tissue — the scanning data proved otherwise. About 3–5% of fruit that looks perfect externally shows internal faults the scan catches.

Pesticide residue testing runs weekly through the season at Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane — NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284. The April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) found all 28 tested residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg. One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free."

How to Select a Good Mango

Hapus Aam Hapus Amba — how to select a good Alphonso mango

When you receive your box, look for a uniform yellow-green to golden skin with no large dark patches. Small lenticel dots are normal and expected on Hapus — they are not a defect. The stem end should smell faintly sweet even before the fruit is fully ripe. Avoid any fruit that smells of chemicals near the stem, which can indicate carbide use.

How do I ripen mangoes at home if they arrive firm?

Leave them at room temperature, stem-side up, in a single layer. Do not refrigerate unripe mangoes. A closed cardboard box speeds ripening slightly by trapping the fruit's own ethylene. They will be ready in two to three days. Once ripe — the skin gives slightly under gentle thumb pressure and the stem end smells strongly sweet — refrigerate and eat within two days. Read our complete guide to ripening mangoes at home for more detail.

Season and Availability

Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak supply in March, April and May. We do not stock or sell fresh Alphonso from July to January. Pre-orders open before the season starts so you can lock in early batches, which tend to have lower ambient temperatures during transit and arrive in better condition than peak-summer dispatches.

Pre-orders can be cancelled only before dispatch. Once we send a tracking number, the order is on its way.

If transit damage or quality failure occurs, report it within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video sent on WhatsApp. No physical return is needed. We send a fresh replacement dispatch or credit your account for the next purchase.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, the phenolic compound concentrated in Alphonso pulp, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a 2011 cell study by Govindappa et al. — a single cell-study result, not a clinical claim.

Alphonso puree is commonly introduced to babies from around six months as a first fruit. Treat this as a serving suggestion, not medical advice — speak to your paediatrician for individual guidance.

People Also Ask

What are the benefits of eating mangos?

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g — enough to meet about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for men and about 50% for women in a single serving. Mangoes also supply beta-carotene, dietary fibre, and mangiferin, a polyphenol studied for anti-inflammatory activity by Govindappa et al. in 2011.

Natural hay-bed ripening — the method used at our Mumbai packhouse — preserves these compounds better than carbide-forced ripening, which shortcuts the enzymatic conversion that builds both flavour and nutrition.

What diseases does mango prevent?

No single fruit prevents disease, and no regulatory body has approved a prevention claim for mango. What the evidence does show: mangiferin from mango pulp demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in a 2011 cell study by Govindappa et al. Beta-carotene supports immune function. Dietary fibre aids gut health. These are contributions to a balanced diet, not cures.

If you want a fruit that delivers these compounds without residue concerns, every batch we dispatch is independently tested at Envirocare Labs — all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits.

Is mango a vegetable or a fruit?

Mango is a fruit — botanically a drupe, meaning a fleshy fruit with a single hard stone at the centre. The outer flesh develops from the flower's ovary wall after pollination. In Indian kitchens, raw green mango is cooked like a vegetable in pickles and chutneys, but botanically it remains a fruit at every stage of ripeness.

The Alphonso variety — GI Tag No. 139 covering Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — is the same botanical species, Mangifera indica, as every other mango on the market.

Is mango healthy or unhealthy?

Mango is healthy for most people in normal serving sizes. One 100 g serving of ripe Alphonso supplies roughly 30–36 mg vitamin C, beta-carotene, fibre, and mangiferin. The natural sugar content — 18–24° Brix in GI-tagged Hapus — means people managing blood sugar should watch portion size, but that applies equally to most fruits.

The sourcing method matters too: fruit ripened naturally on a hay bed, as ours is, reaches full sugar conversion without carbide or ethylene shortcuts, so what you eat reflects what the tree actually produced.
