Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Alphonso?

Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is geography — about 80 km of coastline separates the two — and that gap shows in flavour and texture.

If you are undecided, our 46% repeat-customer rate suggests buyers usually try one and order the other the same season. The Devgad fruit runs slightly higher Brix at the top of the range; the Ratnagiri tends toward a more pronounced aroma that you notice before you even cut the fruit.

Delivery Across India

Fruit leaves the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. It travels by air-conditioned vehicle to our Mumbai packhouse, spends 24–48 hours on a natural hay bed there, then goes out by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.

Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

Each box is 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (130 gsm, alternate flute orientation, courier-grade) with reinforced corners, a 12-slot partition that takes the transit pressure instead of the fruit, and six air holes for airflow. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve that prevents bruising, skin friction and latex cross-contamination. The fruit travels at 70–80% ripeness and reaches full ripeness within about three days of delivery.

We do not ship fresh Alphonso from July to January. The fruit simply does not exist in that window, and we will not substitute with cold-store or blended stock.

How to Order

  1. Select your mango and grade. Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849 to ₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849 to ₹5,499). Each listing shows the available size grades — Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g) — and box options (half dozen, 1 dozen, 2 dozen).
  2. Add to cart and check out. The site uses standard Shopify checkout with secure payment. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.
  3. We dispatch and you track. Your box goes out by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. If anything arrives damaged, photograph or video the fruit and packaging and send it to us on WhatsApp within 24 hours — no physical return needed; we dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account.

Indian Mango Varieties

Best Indian mangoes online — Alphonso, Kesar and more from AlphonsoMango.in

India grows more than a thousand named mango cultivars, but a handful command serious attention from buyers who know the difference.

Alphonso (Hapus)

Alphonso — called Hapus in Marathi — holds GI No. 139, covering Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in Maharashtra's Konkan coast. Brix at full ripeness runs 18–24°. The skin is thin and saffron-yellow; the fibre-free pulp is dense and aromatic. It is the mango most exported from India, and the one our operation is built around.

Kesar

Kesar holds GI Tag No. 185, covering Junagadh and the Gir region of Gujarat. The pulp colour is a deep orange-gold — closer to saffron threads than to Alphonso's yellow. Flavour is sweet with a faintly floral note. We source Kesar from the Gir region and sell it alongside Alphonso through the season.

Other Varieties We Carry

Our catalogue includes Aamras, mango pulp, and processed mango products available year-round. Fresh varieties beyond Alphonso and Kesar are listed on the site when in season — check our mango collection for current availability.

Where Our Mangoes Come From

Indian mangoes online — sourced from 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad

We source from 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — more than 100 partner farmer families, with orchards typically 12–25 years old. Prashant Powle selected each orchard on three criteria: Brix consistency across the tree's alternate-bearing years, tree longevity, and adherence to cultivation SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are used from flowering to harvest.

On the Ratnagiri side, villages include Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Mirya, Kalbadevi, Majgaon, Kasheli and Adi, along with Rajapur, Bankot, Jaitapur, Ansure, Kelshi, Anjarle, Velneshwar and Velas across Rajapur, Lanja and Mandangad talukas.

On the Devgad (Sindhudurg) side: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre, Kanyabag, Padel, Girye, Rameshwar, Waghotan, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav, Katwan, Aare, Shirgaon, Tambaldeg, Ilye, Munge, Khavane, Tiravade, Koregaon, Baparde and Mandivali. We also source from Malvan and Vengurla talukas — Achara, Tondavali, Kochare, Mochemad and Shiroda.

These orchards face the Arabian Sea. The laterite soil, the coastal humidity and the specific microclimate of the Konkan belt are what give Alphonso its Brix range of 18–24° — a combination that has never been replicated in any other Indian growing region despite decades of attempts.

How the Fruit Is Harvested

Every mango is hand-harvested using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, we use an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera. This matters because a bruised stem-end blackens within two days and ruins the fruit regardless of how well everything else is done.

Grading at the Packhouse

Every fruit is weighed and graded into Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g). AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal issues — spongy tissue — and external deformities before packing. We assumed visual grading alone was sufficient until the scanner flagged spongy tissue in fruit that looked perfect from the outside. The grading table proved otherwise.

How We Ripen the Fruit

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay, monitored, not gas-triggered.

Post-harvest cooling follows the harvest. Then the fruit travels by air-conditioned vehicle from Ratnagiri or Devgad to Mumbai — about 10–12 hours. After the hay-bed rest, it goes into courier packaging and dispatches. Total time from harvest to dispatch: 48–72 hours.

Carbide-ripened fruit turns uniformly yellow but stays starchy inside — the sugar conversion has not happened. Hay-ripened Alphonso develops its colour unevenly (often with a green shoulder) but the pulp is fully converted, aromatic and at 18–24° Brix. That green shoulder is a quality indicator, not a flaw.

We test weekly through the season. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) tested our fruit on 5 April 2025 — all 28 residues were within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free."

Season and Availability

Fresh Alphonso runs February to June, peaking March to May. Devgad fruit typically follows Ratnagiri by two to three weeks because the geography — further south, slightly different monsoon timing — shifts the flowering cycle.

From July to January, fresh Alphonso does not exist on the tree. We sell no fresh mango in that window. Year-round, you can order Aamras, mango pulp and other processed products from our catalogue.

The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for women (65 mg/day). These figures apply per 100 g serving only.

Mangiferin, a polyphenol concentrated in mango skin and pulp, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a 2011 cell study by Govindappa et al. Alphonso's fibre-free pulp also makes it one of the cleaner fruits to eat without waste — no stringy fibres catching in the teeth, nothing to work around.

Alphonso puree is suitable for babies from about 6 months as a first fruit — keep this as a serving suggestion, not medical advice, and check with your paediatrician.

Authenticity and Certifications

The GI tag for Alphonso mango (GI No. 139) covers only Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. A mango grown elsewhere and labelled "Hapus" or "Alphonso" is not legally entitled to that designation. Every box from us carries fruit from within the GI zone, dispatched under our Authorised User credentials.

Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-product award recognising the Ratnagiri region's Alphonso, not an award specific to this brand.

In June 2026, Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times on the existential crisis facing Alphonso production that year due to weather and yield pressures (read the article). That piece quoted him as a GI-certified Alphonso grower and trader — because both descriptions are accurate.

People Also Ask

What are the benefits of eating mango?

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, meeting about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 daily requirement for men and about 50% for women. It also supplies mangiferin, a polyphenol studied for anti-inflammatory activity (Govindappa et al., 2011), along with natural sugars, dietary fibre, and beta-carotene.

If you want the nutritional value without dilution from cold storage, fruit dispatched within 48–72 hours of harvest and ripened on a natural hay bed arrives closer to peak nutrient density than fruit that has sat in a cold store for weeks.

What diseases does mango prevent?

No food prevents disease on its own, and mango is no exception. What the evidence does show: mangiferin, a xanthonoid in Alphonso pulp, demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity in a 2011 cell study by Govindappa et al. The vitamin C in mango supports immune function. These are associations from early research, not prevention claims.

Eat mango as part of a balanced diet during the February-to-June season when the fruit is fresh, fibre-complete, and not a concentrate.

Is mango healthy or unhealthy?

Mango is healthy for most people when eaten as whole fruit in reasonable amounts. One 100 g serving of ripe Alphonso supplies 30–36 mg of vitamin C, natural fibre, and beta-carotene. The sugar is intrinsic, not added, and the fibre slows absorption. People managing blood sugar should watch portion size and check with their doctor.

The difference between a nutritionally sound mango and a poor one is often ripening method — fruit ripened naturally on a hay bed retains full flavour and texture without chemical residue from calcium carbide.

Is a mango a fruit or a vegetable?

Mango is a fruit — botanically, a drupe, meaning it has a fleshy outer part surrounding a hard stone that contains the seed. It grows on Mangifera indica trees, flowers in winter, and the fruit matures between February and June in India's Konkan coast, where GI-tagged Alphonso (Hapus) is harvested by hand from orchards in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.
