Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Order?
Both carry GI Tag No. 139. The difference is real but subtle. Devgad fruit, sourced from coastal orchards in villages like Devgad, Jamsande and Vijaydurg, typically reaches the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range. Ratnagiri fruit from villages like Pawas, Golap and Nachane is slightly firmer at dispatch, which handles north India's longer transit well. Repeat-order data from our 47,000+ customers shows north India consistently leans Ratnagiri — that's the honest signal from the numbers.

Delivery Across India
Every box leaves our Malvan packing centre or Devgad packing point within 48–72 hours of harvest. The fruit travels roughly 2 hours by vehicle to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, then 10–12 hours by air-conditioned transport to Mumbai, where it rests on a natural hay bed for 24–48 hours before dispatch. From Mumbai, your box goes out by courier. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.
Packaging is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box at 130 gsm, with a 12-slot partition that takes the transit pressure so the fruit doesn't. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) that stops skin friction — important because Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow going so condensation evaporates rather than triggering anthracnose.
We do not sell fresh Alphonso from July to January. That's the honest limit: the tree is biennial-bearing and the Konkan season closes by June. Aamras and mango pulp are available year-round.
Where These Mangoes Come From
We source from 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad. On the Ratnagiri side: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Mirya and others. On the Sindhudurg side: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav and surrounding coastal villages. Our 100+ partner farmer families run orchards typically 12–25 years old, selected by founder Prashant Powle on three criteria: Brix consistency, tree longevity and alternate-bearing management.
Harvest is by hand, using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees we use an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera so the harvester can see the stem before cutting. This matters because bruising at harvest is invisible for 48 hours but shows up at your door.
What makes Konkan Alphonso different from other Indian mangoes?
The combination is geographic. Sea-facing hillside orchards in Ratnagiri and Devgad get a specific diurnal temperature swing during flowering (February–March) and a laterite soil profile that limits water retention. That stress pushes sugar development. Brix of 18–24° at full ripeness is not something you replicate in orchard soil 500 km inland. The GI No. 139 boundary exists precisely because fruit outside Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts does not achieve the same profile — verified by the GI Registry and reconfirmed with every season's Envirocare Labs residue panel.
How to Identify a Genuine Alphonso
A real Hapus is golden-yellow at ripeness, with a thin skin, saffron-coloured pulp and almost no fibre. The stem end smells faintly floral before the fruit is cut. Weight for a Medium grade is 180–225 g; an Extra Large runs 250–275 g. If a box claims "Alphonso" but lists no GI authorisation number, you have no traceability to Ratnagiri or Devgad.
Every mango we dispatch has passed AI/ML-assisted machine scanning for internal deformities — specifically spongy tissue, which is invisible externally but ruins the eating experience. That scanning step was the part we got wrong early on: we assumed visual grading caught it. The machine proved otherwise. We added it after the 2020 season.
What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?
At full ripeness, Devgad Alphonso reaches 18–24° Brix, with fruit from coastal Sindhudurg villages like Devgad and Jamsande regularly at the upper end of that range. We test residues weekly through the season at Envirocare Labs, Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). All 28 residues in the April 2025 panel were within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification.
Ripening and Handling
Every fruit is hay-bed ripened — no ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is monitored natural ripening on hay (Aadi method), not gas-triggered. Fruit ships at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough for transit, reaching full ripeness within about three days of delivery.
Once delivered, keep the box in a cool, ventilated spot — not the refrigerator, not in direct sun. When two or three mangoes soften to gentle thumb pressure at the shoulder, the whole batch is ready. Refrigerate only after cutting.
Season and Pricing
The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak volume in March and April. Prices are highest in February when supply is thin. By April, as Ratnagiri and Devgad orchards reach full yield, prices stabilise. Current online prices for Devgad Alphonso range from ₹1,849 to ₹5,499 depending on grade and box size. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.
From July to January, fresh Alphonso is simply not available from us. Any seller offering "fresh Alphonso" in August should be treated with scepticism — the crop does not exist in India at that time of year.

People Also Ask
What is the cost of 1 kg Alphonso mango?
GI-certified Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri or Devgad is sold by the dozen, not by the kilogram, because ripeness and grade vary per fruit. On alphonsomango.in, boxes start at ₹1,849 for half a dozen up to two dozen. A Medium-grade fruit weighs 180–225 g, so a dozen runs roughly 2.2–2.7 kg.
Ordering by the box protects ripeness in transit — loose-weight retail handling bruises Alphonso lenticels and accelerates spoilage.
Where can I find mangoes in Chandigarh?
Local markets in Chandigarh sell Kesar and Dussehri in season, but GI-certified Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso is rarely stocked there. The reliable route is ordering directly from an APEDA-registered, GI-authorised source online.
Repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India consistently orders Ratnagiri Alphonso, which ships firmer and handles the longer transit to Punjab well.
Which Alphonso mango is best in India?
Devgad and Ratnagiri Alphonso, both covered by GI No. 139, are widely regarded as the finest. Devgad fruit from coastal Sindhudurg villages like Jamsande and Vijaydurg typically hits the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range. Ratnagiri fruit from villages like Pawas and Golap is slightly firmer, making it better for longer transit to north India.
Both must carry a GI authorisation number — without one, there is no traceability to Ratnagiri or Sindhudurg districts.
Can I buy Alphonso mangoes in the USA?
Yes. AlphonsoMango.in exports Alphonso to the US among other countries, operating under APEDA registration 225579 and GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260. Fruit passes an independently verified pesticide-residue panel — all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits — meeting international import standards. Check the site for current export availability during the February-to-June season.
