Buy Alphonso Mango — Indore

Indore's food culture is serious. Sarafa Bazaar alone tells you that. People here know what a good mango tastes like, and the ones arriving in local markets are often carbide-ripened fruit that looks fine and smells of nothing. GI-certified Hapus from Ratnagiri and Devgad is a different fruit entirely — 18–24° Brix at full ripeness, saffron-gold pulp, a fibreless texture, and an aroma that precedes the knife.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Pick

Both Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso carry GI No. 139. The difference is terroir — Devgad fruit, sourced from coastal villages like Jamsande, Vijaydurg and Dahibav, tends to sit at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range. Customers in Mumbai, who eat both side by side, lean Devgad. North India — including Indore — consistently reorders Ratnagiri. That preference held across 47,000+ customer orders since 2020. Neither is wrong; they are two expressions of the same GI.

Delivery Across India

Every box leaves the Mumbai packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. From tree to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse is about two hours. Air-conditioned transport to Mumbai takes 10–12 hours. The fruit then rests on hay for 24–48 hours — natural ripening, no gas, no chambers — before dispatch.

Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your Indore pin code. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

Packaging: a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box (130 gsm, alternate flute orientation, reinforced corners) with a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure, six air holes for airflow, and a foam-net sleeve around each mango to prevent lenticel scarring and stem punctures. Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness. It finishes ripening in roughly three days after delivery — just leave it at room temperature.

What we do not do: we do not dispatch fresh Alphonso July to January. No fruit is available outside the February–June season. If you order outside that window, you will find the product unavailable on the site.

Where the Fruit Comes From

Founder Prashant Powle built the sourcing network from 2017 across 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad. The Devgad taluka villages — Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre, Kanyabag, Padel, Girye, Rameshwar, Waghotan, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav, Katwan, Aare, Shirgaon, Tambaldeg, Ilye, Munge, Khavane, Tiravade, Koregaon, Baparde, Mandivali — are sea-facing, which concentrates sugars and drives the Brix to the upper end of the 18–24° range. Ratnagiri villages like Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mirya and Kasheli produce fruit that is slightly lighter in body but equally aromatic.

Partner orchard families — 100+ of them — follow SOPs on which natural sprays and fertilisers are used from flowering to harvest. Orchards are typically 12–25 years old. Older trees alternate-bear, which Prashant's team manages deliberately: a lighter crop year means each fruit gets more from the tree.

How the fruit is picked

The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. Harvesting uses a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera reads the canopy before the cutter reaches it. One bruise at harvest means spongy tissue by the time it reaches Indore — so every pick counts.

What happens at the packhouse

Every mango is weighed and graded. AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks for internal defects — including spongy tissue — and external deformities before packing. Hot-water treatment after harvest reduces surface issues and extends shelf life. Post-harvest cooling follows before the fruit loads into air-conditioned vehicles for the 10–12 hour run to Mumbai.

How It Ripens Before It Reaches You

This is where most online mango sellers cut corners. Carbide-ripened fruit smells faintly chemical and ripens unevenly — soft skin, hard core, none of the characteristic Hapus aroma. We use hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms at the Mumbai packhouse. The 24–48 hours the fruit sits on hay is monitored; there are no ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind.

The result is a fruit that reaches you at 70–80% ripeness, firms enough to survive transit, and completes naturally in three days on your counter. Indore summers are warm enough that ripening happens quickly — keep the box in a cool corner of the kitchen, not the fridge.

Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) tested the 2025 season fruit: all 28 pesticide residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits — we do not say pesticide-free, because one residue (thiamethoxam, 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg) was detected within limits. Weekly testing runs through the full season.

Season, Storage and What to Expect

When is Alphonso mango season in Indore?

The season runs February to June (the 2027 season starts on 1 February 2027), peak March to May. In Indore you will find local market supplies arriving from March onward, but the sourcing chain from Ratnagiri and Devgad can dispatch from February. By the first week of June, volumes drop sharply. Nothing ships July to January — that is not a policy choice; there is simply no fruit worth sending.

How to store Alphonso after delivery

Leave the box at room temperature until the mangoes are fragrant and yield gently to thumb pressure. Do not refrigerate unripe fruit — cold stalls ripening and damages the texture. Once ripe, you can refrigerate for two to three days, but eat them close to room temperature for the full aroma.

How to Verify You Are Buying GI-Certified Alphonso

GI No. 139 covers Alphonso mangoes grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. The authorised user number for AlphonsoMango.in (operated by Powle Home Foods) is AU/5974/GI/139/260, GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019. Ask any online seller for their authorised user number. If they cannot provide one, the GI claim is unverifiable.

The Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-level product recognition, not an award to any individual seller.

Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 as a GI-certified Alphonso grower and trader on weather, yield and the pressures facing the Konkan mango belt that season. Read that piece here.

People Also Ask

What is the cost of 1 kg Alphonso mango?

GI-certified Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri or Devgad is sold by the dozen, not by the kilogram, because grading by fruit count preserves quality better than weight lots. See the current price on the product page at alphonsomango.in. Per-kg pricing in local markets rarely guarantees GI origin, natural ripening or varietal purity.

If you are buying for the first time, a half dozen is a practical starting point — ripened on hay, no carbide.

Which city is famous for Alphonso Mango in India?

Ratnagiri and Devgad, both in the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, are the source cities famous for Alphonso mango in India. GI No. 139 covers only Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Fruit from these two talukas — sea-facing orchards, laterite soil, coastal humidity — produces the 18–24° Brix, fibreless pulp that defines genuine Hapus.

Mumbai is the main distribution hub, but the fruit originates in villages like Pawas, Golap, Jamsande and Vijaydurg — not in any metro.

Which mango is famous in Madhya Pradesh?

Madhya Pradesh is known for the Langra and Dussehri varieties, grown in Jabalpur and Rewa districts, which reach markets across the state through June and July. Indore itself sits closer to the Gujarat border, so Kesar also arrives here in season. Alphonso, though not grown in MP, is increasingly ordered online from Konkan farms.

Customers in north-central India, including Indore, have consistently reordered Ratnagiri Alphonso — that preference held across 47,000+ orders tracked since 2020.

Which Alphonso mango is best in India?

Devgad and Ratnagiri Alphonso are the two benchmarks, both under GI No. 139. Devgad fruit from coastal villages like Jamsande and Vijaydurg typically sits at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range. Ratnagiri Alphonso from villages like Pawas, Golap and Nachane is equally aromatic, slightly lighter in body, and is the variety north India reorders most.

The honest answer is that neither is universally better — terroir and the individual orchard determine quality more than the taluka name does.
