Devgad vs Ratnagiri Alphonso: Which to Choose?
Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is flavour profile, sourcing village, and where repeat customers lean. Our data from 47,000+ customers shows north India — including Madhya Pradesh — consistently reorders Ratnagiri. Mumbai buyers lean Devgad. Both are correct choices; it depends what you want.

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?
Brix runs 18–24° across the season for both Devgad and Ratnagiri fruit. Devgad fruit, from sea-facing orchards in villages like Jamsande and Vijaydurg, tends to hit the upper end of that range at peak ripeness in April–May.
Delivery Across India
Every box leaves the Mumbai packhouse at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to handle transit. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.
Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. We don't let you choose — the system routes to whoever offers the fastest transit to your address.
The box itself is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard courier-grade carton, 130 gsm paper, with a 12-slot partition that carries transit pressure instead of the fruit. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) on a hay bed. Six air holes on top and bottom keep the fruit breathing during the final ripening window after delivery. That last part matters: the fruit continues to ripen naturally for about three days after it reaches you.
One honest limit: we do not ship fresh Alphonso between July and January. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

Where These Mangoes Come From
Prashant Powle built the sourcing network village by village from 2017. Today it covers 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad — Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav and Kunkeshwar in Sindhudurg; Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange and Kasheli in Ratnagiri taluka; Anjarle, Velneshwar and Kelshi further south in Ratnagiri district. Every orchard is sea-facing, typically 12–25 years old, selected on Brix consistency and how farmers manage alternate bearing.
We assumed when we started that the biggest challenge would be logistics. The grading data proved otherwise — the hardest part is consistency across 100+ partner farmer families at different elevations and soil depths, all within the same GI zone. Each fruit is now weighed and graded individually, and AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks for internal issues like spongy tissue before packing. A mango that doesn't pass the scanner doesn't ship.
Post-harvest, fruit goes through a controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life, then into air-conditioned vehicles for the 10–12 hour run to the Mumbai packhouse. Harvest to dispatch takes 48–72 hours. The supply chain is tight by design — carbide ripening works because it lets sellers hold fruit indefinitely. We can't do that, and we don't want to.
Are these mangoes tested for pesticide residues?
Yes. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) tests weekly through the season. The April 2025 test report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) found all 28 pesticide residues within Codex maximum residue limits. 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg — well within safe limits. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits." We don't say pesticide-free, because that would be inaccurate.
How We Ripen Them
Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. The 24–48 hours the fruit spends at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay — monitored, not gas-triggered. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. This is what the GI protocol requires, and it's what the flavour demands.
Carbide-ripened fruit ripens from the outside in, giving you a yellow skin over pale, flavourless pulp. Hay-ripened Alphonso converts starch to sugar evenly through the flesh — that's where the 18–24° Brix reading comes from at full ripeness. You can taste the difference in the first bite, especially in a mango from Pawas or Golap in Ratnagiri, where the saffron-coloured pulp and the floral top note are most pronounced.
How should I store mangoes after delivery?
Keep them at room temperature until fully ripe (soft to a gentle press, fragrant at the stem). Once ripe, refrigerate and consume within 2–3 days. Don't refrigerate unripe mangoes — cold slows ripening and can damage the pulp texture. The foam-net sleeve and hay bed in the box are there partly so the fruit can continue ripening during transit without bruising against its neighbours.
Mango Season and Availability
The Alphonso and Kesar season runs February to June. Peak is March to May — this is when Brix is highest, supply is most consistent, and the fruit from villages like Devgad and Mavalange is at its best. By early June, volumes drop and quality becomes variable depending on monsoon onset. We stop taking fresh orders when the season ends.
July to January: no fresh mangoes from us. Not "limited stock" — none. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.
Indore gets summer heat early, which makes the March–May window even more relevant: the fruit arrives at its sweetest precisely when the city is hottest and demand is highest.
What You Get in Every Bite
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a polyphenol found in Alphonso pulp and skin, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011) — though that was a cell study, not a clinical trial.
Alphonso puree is suitable as a first fruit for babies from about 6 months — that's a serving suggestion from our product FAQ, not medical advice. For adults, the pulp is also the base of Aamras, which pairs with puri and is a staple of Konkani and Gujarati summer meals.
