Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Mango?

Both carry GI No. 139. Both are hand-harvested and hay-ripened. The differences are real but subtle. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows Mumbai buyers lean toward Devgad — possibly the slightly higher Brix at peak.

Delivery to Mumbai

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit, ripe within about three days of delivery. From the moment it leaves the Devgad or Ratnagiri packhouse, the chain looks like this: roughly 2 hours to the packhouse, then air-conditioned transport to Mumbai (10–12 hours), 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening at our Mumbai packhouse, then dispatch to your address.

Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Metro Mumbai typically receives the box in 20–24 hours from dispatch. Outer pin codes can take up to three days.

The box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) box, 130 gsm, with a 12-slot partition and six air holes top and bottom. Every fruit sits in a foam-net sleeve to prevent the lenticel bruising Alphonso skin is prone to. The partition carries the transit pressure, not the mango.

If fruit arrives damaged in transit or fails a quality check, photograph it and send the photos or a short video on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next order. No physical return is required.

How to Order

  1. Select grade and variety. Choose Ratnagiri (₹1849–₹5399) or Devgad (₹1849–₹5499) on the product page. Grades run Small (150–180 g) through Jumbo (275–300 g); the page shows which sizes are live for the current week of the season.
  2. Add to cart and check out. Box options are half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen. Corporate and HoReCa orders from 5 dozen upward are handled separately — use the bulk enquiry form.
  3. We dispatch and you track. BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees picks up depending on your pin code; 1–3 days to most Indian cities, typically 20–24 hours to Mumbai. Pre-orders placed before the season can be cancelled before dispatch — once the box is booked with the courier, it cannot be recalled.

Where These Mangoes Come From

We source from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. In Devgad taluka alone, that includes Devgad itself, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Kunkeshwar and 18 others. On the Ratnagiri side, orchards in Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mirya and Kalbadevi supply us through the season. Prashant Powle personally oversees grower selection — orchards are 12–25 years old, sea-facing, chosen on documented Brix consistency across seasons.

We work with 100+ partner farmer families. Their cultivation follows strict written SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are applied from flowering through to harvest. The tree is never shaken. Fruit is removed with a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net; tall trees use an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera. This matters because a mango that hits the ground — even once — bruises internally and ferments faster.

How Each Mango Is Graded

Every fruit is weighed and assigned to a grade: Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g). Before packing, AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal issues (spongy tissue) and external deformities. We assumed this scanning would mainly catch cosmetic rejects. The grading data showed it catches a meaningful share of spongy-tissue fruit that looks fine from outside — which is exactly the complaint buyers have with market Hapus.

How We Ripen Them

Natural hay-bed ripening only — what Konkan growers call Aadi ripening. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse happens on hay, in temperature-controlled rooms, with no ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide and no artificial ripening agents of any kind. This is not a marketing claim. Our Envirocare Labs (NABL accredited, Thane) residue panel — certificate TC-8284, report 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025 — tested 28 residues. All 28 fell within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg. We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits. We do not say pesticide-free because one residue (thiamethoxam, 0.013 mg/kg against a limit of 0.2 mg/kg) was detected, within limits.

Post-harvest, each fruit goes through controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life, then cooling at the packhouse before the air-conditioned road leg to Mumbai.

Season and Availability

Fresh Alphonso from Konkan runs February to June, with the peak between March and May. We sell no fresh Alphonso July through January. If you find a site offering Hapus in October, they are either selling last season's cold-store fruit blended with other varieties, or mislabelling a different mango. That is an honest limitation: we go dark for roughly seven months a year because the fruit does not exist in any honest form outside the season.

Can I pre-order mango in Mumbai before the season opens?

Yes. Pre-orders open in February for the March–May peak. You can cancel any pre-order before dispatch. Once booked with the courier, the order is live and cannot be recalled.

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a compound concentrated in Alphonso pulp and skin, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011) — that is a cell-study finding, not a clinical claim. Alphonso puree is suitable for babies from about 6 months as a first fruit — keep it a serving suggestion, not a medical instruction.
