| Customer preference (our data) | North India leans Ratnagiri | Mumbai leans Devgad |
We assumed Devgad would dominate all of Maharashtra — the grading data proved otherwise. Mumbai customers consistently choose Devgad while north Indian reorders skew strongly Ratnagiri. Neither is wrong. They are different expressions of the same GI variety.
Delivery Across India
Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive the journey. The supply chain from harvest to your door runs like this: roughly 2 hours from tree to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, post-harvest cooling, 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to the Mumbai packhouse, then 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening before dispatch. Total time from harvest to dispatch: 48–72 hours.
Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. We cover 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes. Transit times: 20–24 hours to most metro cities, 1–3 days elsewhere in India.
Every mango travels in a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box (130 gsm, alternate flute orientation, reinforced corners) with a 12-slot partition and a foam-net sleeve on each fruit. The diamond mesh keeps airflow going so condensation evaporates rather than sitting on the skin. Six air holes on the top and bottom support natural ripening during transit. The box carries the pressure — not the fruit.
One honest limit: Fresh Alphonso is not available July to January. No fresh Hapus anywhere in India is — the tree simply does not produce outside the February–June season. We do not sell off-season fruit blended with cold-store stock.
How to Order
- Select your grade and variety: Choose Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso, then pick your size — Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g). Box options are half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen. Prices start from ₹1849 for a 1 dozen Small.
- Add to cart and enter your address: Check that your pin code is serviceable — the checkout will confirm courier availability. If you are ordering as a gift, use the gift form at alphonsomango.in/pages/gift-form.
- We dispatch by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code — 20–24 hours to most metros, 1–3 days to most other cities. You will receive tracking details. If fruit arrives transit-damaged, send photos or video on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery — no physical return needed, we send a fresh replacement or credit your account.
How to Know If the Alphonso Is Genuine
What makes a Hapus genuinely GI-certified?
GI No. 139 covers Alphonso grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts only. A seller claiming GI certification should be able to show an Authorised User number from the GI Registry. Ours is AU/5974/GI/139/260 (Ratnagiri) and AU/6932 (Devgad), both on GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019.
If a seller cannot name their Authorised User number, the GI claim is unverified. That is not a grey area — the registry is public at ipindia.gov.in.
How do I know the mangoes are carbide-free?
We use natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms — no ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay, monitored, not gas-triggered. Carbide and pesticide-residue testing runs weekly through the season at Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 test report (01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) shows all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 are below the limit of quantification of 0.01 mg/kg.
We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free", because one residue (thiamethoxam, 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg) was detected within limits.
What does the AI/ML grading process actually check?
Every fruit is weighed and graded. AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal defects — including spongy tissue — and external deformities before packing. Fruit that does not pass does not ship. Prashant Powle built this process across 100+ partner farmer families sourced from 55 villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, selecting orchards on Brix consistency, tree longevity and alternate-bearing management.
Ripening at Home
We dispatch at 70–80% ripeness. The fruit will ripen fully within about three days of delivery at room temperature. If you want to slow ripening, keep the box in a cool, ventilated spot — not in the refrigerator while still firm. Two methods work well if you want to speed things up:
- Paper bag method: Place fruit in a brown paper bag and fold the top shut. The bag traps the natural ethylene the fruit releases, shortening ripening time by a day or so. Check each morning — a ripe Alphonso gives slightly to gentle pressure at the shoulders and smells unmistakably sweet near the stem.
- Rice method: Bury the mangoes in a container of uncooked rice. The rice absorbs surface moisture and maintains warmth around the fruit. Traditional, and it works.
Do not use a plastic bag — trapped humidity encourages mould on the lenticels. And never ripen in direct sun; the skin scorches before the pulp is ready.
Season and Availability
The Alphonso season runs February to June, peaking March to May. Outside that window, the tree does not produce, and there is no authentic fresh Hapus anywhere in India to sell. We close fresh mango orders at the end of June and reopen pre-orders when the next season approaches. Kesar mango from Junagadh district, Gujarat (GI No. 185, Girnar foothills, Gir, Talala) follows a similar peak window and is available on site during the season.
Ratnagiri won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-level recognition for the Alphonso as Ratnagiri's defining product, not a brand award. The ODOP programme is administered by the National Horticulture Board.
In June 2026, Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times as a GI-certified Alphonso grower and trader on weather, yield and the pressures on the variety in a difficult season.

People Also Ask
Where is the best place to buy mangoes?
Buy directly from a GI-authorised source that can show you its Authorised User number from the GI Registry. For Alphonso, that means a seller covered under GI No. 139 with verifiable credentials — not just a label claim. AlphonsoMango.in (Powle Home Foods) holds AU/5974/GI/139/260 for Ratnagiri and AU/6932 for Devgad, both verifiable at ipindia.gov.in.
Ordering direct from the source cuts out cold-store middlemen and gets you fruit dispatched within 48–72 hours of harvest.
How can I choose the right mango to buy?
Start with origin: Alphonso (Hapus) is GI-tagged only to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — ask for the seller's Authorised User number before paying. Then pick your grade by weight: Small (150–180 g) for everyday eating, Medium (180–225 g) for gifting, Jumbo (275–300 g) for maximum pulp. Season runs February to June.
Repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India tends to prefer Ratnagiri while Mumbai leans Devgad — both are the same GI variety, just different flavour expressions.
