A ripe mango yields to gentle thumb pressure near the stem, carries a sweet fragrance, and reads 18–24° Brix at peak. Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso season runs February to June (the 2027 season starts on 1 February 2027); prices start from ₹1,849. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

Both varieties below are dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit, ripening fully within about three days of delivery. Every fruit is weighed, graded, and scanned by our AI/ML machine before packing. Natural hay-bed ripening only: no carbide, no ethylene chambers.
Ratnagiri vs Devgad: How They Compare
Both carry GI No. 139. The difference shows up in texture and where repeat customers come from: our order data shows north India leans Ratnagiri, Mumbai leans Devgad.

Delivery Across India
From harvest in Ratnagiri or Devgad to your door takes roughly 48–72 hours in the field-to-dispatch leg. Fruit travels about 2 hours to the packhouse, then 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to our Mumbai facility, where it spends 24–48 hours on hay beds for natural ripening before dispatch.
We dispatch via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.
Packaging: a 5-ply corrugated CFB box with 12-slot partitions that absorb transit pressure, every mango in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) on a hay bed, with six air holes top and bottom. The foam net prevents lenticel blackening — Alphonso skin bruises from friction — and keeps airflow so condensation evaporates rather than triggering surface mould.
Honest limit: Fresh Alphonso is not available July to January. The season ends in June and does not restart until February. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

Signs of a Ripe Mango
Colour is the least reliable signal. A Ratnagiri Alphonso can be fully ripe and still wear a patch of green near the base. A Devgad fruit from Jamsande or Girye sometimes reaches 22–23° Brix while the skin still shows a faint green tinge. Here is what actually works:
1. The sniff test
Press your nose to the stem end. A ripe Alphonso smells unmistakably sweet — faintly of saffron and honey, not of alcohol. No smell means more time on the counter. An alcoholic or vinegary note means it has gone past peak.
2. The gentle squeeze
Cup the fruit and apply light, even thumb pressure. A ripe mango gives slightly — like a ripe avocado — without denting. Rock-hard means 1–2 more days at room temperature. Mushy means overripe: still usable for aamras, but not for eating whole.
3. Stem and skin
The stem area softens first. On an Alphonso, you may see a tiny bead of dried latex at the stem end — that is normal and actually a sign the fruit was harvested with care. The skin around the stem should feel slightly yielding before the shoulders do.
4. What colour actually tells you
Ratnagiri Alphonso turns golden-yellow when fully ripe, often with a saffron blush. But do not wait for full-yellow colour — by then the shoulders may already be soft. Devgad fruit from sea-facing orchards in Vijaydurg taluka tends to hold green patches longer than Ratnagiri fruit at the same Brix. Use smell and squeeze first; colour is confirmation, not the test.
How to Ripen a Mango at Home
We dispatch at 70–80% ripeness deliberately: the fruit firms up enough to survive a 1–3 day courier journey without bruising. When your box arrives, give the fruit 2–3 days at room temperature before refrigerating.
The paper bag method
Place 2–3 mangoes in a paper bag (not plastic — plastic traps moisture and can cause mould). Fold the top loosely. Room temperature around 25–28°C works well. Check daily with the squeeze test. The paper bag concentrates the naturally released ethylene the fruit itself produces — no external gas needed.
The hay or newspaper wrap
This is how our Mumbai packhouse handles the final ripening stage: fruit rests on a hay bed in a temperature-controlled room for 24–48 hours. At home, wrapping each fruit individually in newspaper and placing them in a wooden or cardboard box achieves a similar effect. It also prevents contact bruising between fruits.
What not to do
Placing unripe mangoes in the refrigerator stops ripening almost completely and can cause chilling injury — black skin patches and off-flavours in the pulp. Refrigerate only after the fruit has reached the squeeze-and-smell sweet spot.
Storing a Ripe Mango
A ripe Alphonso keeps for 3–5 days in the refrigerator. Store whole, not cut. Once cut, the pulp oxidises within a few hours at room temperature — cover tightly with cling film or store in an airtight container and use within a day.
For aamras or pulp, freeze in small portions. Frozen Alphonso pulp from peak-season fruit (March–May, when Brix runs 20–24°) is meaningfully sweeter than off-season alternatives. We do not sell fresh Alphonso July to January — that is not when the fruit exists.
What a Ripe Alphonso Gives You Nutritionally
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangoes are also a source of beta-carotene, potassium and fibre.
Govindappa et al. (2011) demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity from mangiferin — a polyphenol present in mango — in cell studies. This is a cell study, not a clinical trial, so read it as early-stage evidence rather than a health claim.
Our fruit was independently tested by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284; report 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025). All 28 pesticide residues tested were within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg. One residue — thiamethoxam at 0.013 mg/kg — was detected, against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We do not say "pesticide-free"; we say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits.
How to Know Your Alphonso Is Genuine
The GI tag on an Alphonso means the fruit was grown in either Ratnagiri or Sindhudurg district, under GI No. 139. An authorised user — Powle Home Foods holds AU/5974/GI/139/260 for Ratnagiri and AU/6932 for Devgad — is audited against those production standards. The tag is not just a label; it restricts who can legally call a fruit "Alphonso."
Prashant Powle sources directly from 100+ partner farmer families across 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad. The orchards are typically 12–25 years old, selected on Brix consistency and tree longevity. Fruit is harvested by hand using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net — the tree is never shaken, the fruit never falls to the ground. An indigenously developed camera-equipped pole is used for tall trees. That distinction matters: a dropped Alphonso develops internal bruising that becomes spongy tissue within days, and spongy tissue cannot be reversed.
Each mango is weighed, graded, and passed through AI/ML-assisted machine scanning that checks for internal defects (including spongy tissue) and external deformities before packing. This is why our grading table occasionally surprises even us — we assumed a majority of early-season fruit would clear the XL cutoff, but the machine flagged a higher rate of spongy tissue in the first two weeks of March 2025 than our visual checks had caught.

Source: Powle Home Foods (AlphonsoMango.in), AI/ML-assisted machine scanning flags internal spongy tissue and external deformities in every mango before it is packed — a check added after early-season 2025 grading data showed a higher spongy-tissue incidence in March than visual inspection alone had detected.
People Also Ask
How do you tell if a mango is ripe?
Smell the stem end first. A ripe Alphonso smells unmistakably sweet — faintly of saffron and honey, never alcoholic. Then cup the fruit and press gently: it should yield slightly, like a ripe avocado. Colour comes last; a Devgad fruit from Vijaydurg can read 22–23° Brix while still showing a faint green patch.
If you get a box from us, give the fruit 2–3 days at room temperature after delivery — we dispatch at 70–80% ripeness so it survives the courier journey intact.
When can I not eat a mango?
Avoid a mango that smells alcoholic or vinegary — that signals it has gone past peak and fermentation has begun. Skip it also if the skin is sunken, weeping liquid, or shows black rot rather than surface lenticels. A mushy fruit is still safe blended into aamras, but past comfortable eating as a whole fruit.
For fresh Alphonso specifically, the season closes in June and does not reopen until February — there is no genuine Konkan Alphonso available between July and January.
Is a ripe mango high in sugar?
Ripe Alphonso registers 18–24° Brix, so the natural sugar is real and noticeable. That sweetness comes packaged with dietary fibre, which slows glucose absorption. One 100 g serving also provides roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C — about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 daily requirement for adult men. Moderate portions suit most people who are not managing diabetes.
If blood sugar is a concern, eat mango with a meal rather than alone, and keep portions to one medium fruit.
What organ is mango good for?
A ripe mango supports the gut most directly — the dietary fibre in Alphonso pulp feeds beneficial bacteria and aids regular digestion. The liver benefits from mangiferin, a polyphenol studied by Govindappa et al. (2011) for anti-inflammatory activity in cell models. Eyes gain from beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A.
