Ratnagiri vs Devgad Alphonso: Which Should You Order?

Both carry GI No. 139 and come from the same Konkan coast. The difference is real but subtle. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India — Raipur included — leans Ratnagiri, while Mumbai leans Devgad. Devgad fruit tends to sit at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range; Ratnagiri is more consistent across the season.

Delivery Across India

Fruit is harvested by hand in the orchard — never shaken from the tree — and reaches our packhouse within about two hours. From there it goes into air-conditioned transport to Mumbai, 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening, then dispatch. The full harvest-to-dispatch window is 48–72 hours.

Every box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard courier-grade box, 130 gsm paper, with a 12-slot partition that takes the transit pressure instead of the fruit. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) that prevents skin friction scars — Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed — and stem punctures from neighbouring fruit. Six air holes on the top and bottom keep airflow going during the final ripening stage after you receive the box.

We dispatch via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

Fruit leaves our packhouse at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit, fully ripe within about three days of delivery.

One honest limit: we do not dispatch fresh Alphonso July to January. The season is over. Aamras, mango pulp and other processed products are available year-round, but fresh fruit is strictly February to June.

How to Order

  1. Select your grade. Visit alphonsomango.in/collections/mangoes, choose Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso, then pick your size grade — Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g) — and box size: half dozen, one dozen or two dozen.
  2. Add to cart and enter your Raipur pin code. The checkout confirms courier availability and delivery estimate for your pin code before you pay.
  3. We dispatch within 48–72 hours of harvest via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code; delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes.

If any fruit arrives transit-damaged or quality-failed, photograph it and send the images to us on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. No physical return required. We replace the fruit with a fresh dispatch or credit your account for the next purchase. That policy was confirmed by Prashant Powle on 21 September 2026.

Where the Fruit Comes From

Alphonso mangoes sourced from Konkan villages for delivery to Raipur

Prashant Powle built the sourcing network across 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad, in the Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — the precise GI-designated geography for Alphonso under GI No. 139. Villages like Pawas, Golap and Mirya in Ratnagiri taluka; Devgad, Vijaydurg and Girye in Sindhudurg's Devgad taluka; and Achara, Tondavali and Shiroda along the Malvan and Vengurla coast.

The 100+ partner farmer families follow strict cultivation SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are used from flowering to harvest. Orchards are typically 12–25 years old, selected on Brix consistency, tree longevity and alternate-bearing management. Sea-facing exposure on the Konkan laterite is not replicable inland — it is why Raipur's summer heat produces a different mango entirely from what these orchards yield.

Harvesting uses a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera ensures the crew can see what they're cutting before they cut it.

How to Spot Authentic GI-Certified Alphonso

The GI tag for Alphonso mango (GI No. 139) covers only Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. A seller at Pandri market in Raipur cannot hold GI Authorised User status for Alphonso — the certification requires direct linkage to the registered geography and an official GI Registry authorisation. Powle Home Foods holds GI Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260, Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019.

When you buy online, check for the GI certificate number. Check for FSSAI (ours: 10020022011783) and APEDA (ours: 225579) registration. Check for a transparent ripening declaration. If a seller cannot produce all three, the provenance is unverifiable.

What the GI Number Actually Means for You

GI No. 139 does not just mean origin. It means the fruit passed through an authorised supply chain, was graded to a registered standard, and is traceable back to the designated villages. That traceability is why 46% of our 47,000+ customers reorder — they can verify what they bought.

Natural Ripening — No Carbide

Hapus Alphonso mango natural hay-bed ripening before delivery to Raipur

Our fruit ripens on hay beds in temperature-controlled rooms at the Mumbai packhouse — 24 to 48 hours of natural ripening, monitored, not gas-triggered. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind.

Carbide ripening is common at wholesale markets, including those supplying Raipur. It speeds up colour development without building flavour or Brix. Hay-bed ripening — called Aadi ripening in Konkan tradition — lets the fruit's own ethylene do the work, which is why the saffron-yellow skin and the 18–24° Brix develop together rather than separately.

Pesticide residues are tested weekly through the season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 report — certificate 01/ETHAP2500044 — found all 28 tested residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested and within limits — not pesticide-free.

Storage and Ripening at Home

Your box arrives with the fruit at 70–80% ripeness. Keep it at room temperature — not in the refrigerator — for up to three days. The hay in the box continues the ripening process. Once a mango gives slightly to thumb pressure at the shoulders, it is ready. Refrigerate only after it has fully ripened, and consume within two days of refrigeration.

Can you ripen the fruit faster?

Wrapping individual mangoes loosely in newspaper traps natural ethylene and shortens the ripening window by about a day. Do not use a sealed plastic bag — it traps moisture and causes mould at the stem.

Nutrition at a Glance

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 daily requirement for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). The pulp also contains mangiferin, a xanthone with anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011).

Alphonso purée is suitable as an introduced food for babies from around six months — serve this as a suggestion, not medical advice; always check with your paediatrician.

Season Window and Availability

Fresh Alphonso runs February to June, with the best fruit arriving March to May. By mid-June the season winds down sharply. We do not sell fresh Alphonso July to January — the product simply does not exist in that window, and anyone claiming to sell fresh GI Alphonso outside the season is misrepresenting the fruit.

If you are in Raipur and miss the season, Aamras and mango pulp — both made from the same Konkan Alphonso — are available year-round at alphonsomango.in/collections/mangoes.

The Economic Times interviewed Prashant Powle in June 2026 on exactly how weather pressure shortens the season and affects yield — read the piece here.

People Also Ask

What is the cost of 1 kg Alphonso mango?

GI-certified Alphonso mango is sold by the dozen or half-dozen, not by the kilogram, so a per-kg price varies by grade. A Medium fruit (180–225 g) in a one-dozen box gives you roughly 2.2–2.7 kg per box. Prices depend on grade, season and availability — check alphonsomango.in for current rates. Devgad Jumbo fruit (275–300 g per mango) gives you the most pulp per box if value per gram matters to you.

Which city is famous for Alphonso mango in India?

Ratnagiri and Devgad — both in Maharashtra's Konkan coast — are the origin cities for GI-certified Alphonso mango under GI No. 139. No other geography is authorised to sell fruit under that tag. Mumbai is the main trading hub, but the orchards are in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, in villages like Pawas, Golap, Devgad and Vijaydurg.

Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024, confirming its standing as India's benchmark mango district.

Where can I find a mango store in Raipur?

Raipur's fruit markets — Pandri, TAT Mill, Mahamaya — carry summer mangoes, but no seller there holds a GI Authorised User certificate for Alphonso under GI No. 139. For certified Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso delivered to your Raipur address (delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes), you order online from a GI-authorised seller and the courier brings the box to your door.

Powle Home Foods (GI Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260) dispatches fresh mangoes by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes, including Raipur, during the February to June season.

Which mango is famous in Gujarat?

Gir Kesar is the mango Gujarat is known for, holding GI Tag No. 185 covering Junagadh and the Gir region. It is a saffron-yellow, sweet variety distinct from Alphonso in pulp texture and aroma. Kesar and Alphonso are both available online during the March–June season, sourced from their respective GI-designated geographies.
