Delivery of Mangoes to Mumbai

Fruit leaves our Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse 48–72 hours after harvest. It travels in air-conditioned vehicles to our Mumbai packhouse, rests on a natural hay bed for 24–48 hours (monitored, not gas-triggered), then dispatches to your door via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

We dispatch at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit, fully ripe within about three days of delivery. If your fruit arrives unripe, leave it at room temperature away from direct sun for two to three days. Do not refrigerate unripe mangoes.

If fruit arrives transit-damaged or fails quality, photograph or video the fruit and packaging and send it on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. No physical return is needed. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next purchase.

Where the Fruit Actually Comes From

Prashant Powle started AlphonsoMango.in in 2017 because he grew up watching Konkan growers sell genuine fruit at a fraction of what middlemen charged in Mumbai. Powle Home Foods now works with 100+ partner farmer families across 48 named villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts.

On the Ratnagiri side, fruit comes from Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Mirya and Kalbadevi, among others. On the Devgad side — villages like Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Kunkeshwar and Mithbav. Sea-facing orchards, trees typically 12–25 years old, selected on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management.

Harvesting uses a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls to the ground. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera lets the harvester see and cut precisely. That single detail keeps bruising near zero before the mango even reaches a crate.

What does GI No. 139 mean for Mumbai buyers?

GI Tag No. 139 covers Alphonso grown only in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User status AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019) and AU/6932 for Devgad. Any mango sold as "GI Alphonso" without an Authorised User number is unverified. Ask your supplier for the certificate number before you pay.

How We Ripen the Mangoes

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is monitored natural ripening on hay, not gas-triggered.

Calcium carbide is banned under India's Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations. It leaves acetylene residue on the skin and gives a yellow exterior with unripe, starchy flesh inside. Our fruit ripens from the core outward, which is why a ripe Alphonso from us smells sweet at the stem end and gives slightly at the base when pressed.

We test for pesticide residues weekly through the season. The April 2025 Envirocare Labs report (certificate 01/ETHAP2500044) found all 28 residues within Codex limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). The one detected residue — thiamethoxam at 0.013 mg/kg — sits well below the 0.2 mg/kg Codex limit. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" and nothing more than that.

How to tell a naturally ripened Alphonso from a carbide-treated one

Natural ripening gives even golden-yellow skin with occasional green patches near the stem. Carbide fruit goes uniformly yellow outside while staying starchy inside. Cut a carbide fruit and the flesh near the stone is often white. A naturally ripened Alphonso is orange-yellow through to the seed.

For a detailed guide, read our article: how to identify carbide-ripened mangoes.

Storage After Delivery

At 70–80% ripeness (firm, faintly fragrant), keep the box at room temperature — 22–28°C works well in Mumbai. Full ripeness takes two to three days. Once fully ripe (gives at the base, intensely fragrant at stem), refrigerate and eat within two days. Do not wash until you are ready to eat. Do not stack heavy objects on the box.

A 100 g serving of ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C — about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 daily requirement for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Alphonso also contains mangiferin, a polyphenol studied by Govindappa et al. (2011) for anti-inflammatory activity in cell models.

Season and Availability

Fresh Alphonso is available February to June, with peak supply in March, April and May. We do not sell fresh Alphonso from July to January — the orchards do not produce and we will not substitute with cold-stored or off-season fruit. If you see "fresh Alphonso" offered in August in Mumbai, ask where it came from.

Kesar mango (GI No. 185, sourced from Junagadh and Gir region) runs a slightly different window. Our catalogue also includes Aamras, mango pulp, cashews, dates, saffron and dry fruits, which are available year-round.

The Ratnagiri Alphonso won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-product award that recognises Ratnagiri's standing as India's benchmark Alphonso origin.

Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on weather, yield and the pressures facing GI-certified Alphonso growers this season (read the article).
