Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows Mumbai leans Devgad. The sea-facing orchards at Jamsande and Kunkeshwar produce fruit with a slightly deeper saffron colour and — in most seasons — a touch more sweetness. That said, Ratnagiri fruit from villages like Pawas and Golap is easier to source in larger quantities early in March, so if you want the first mangoes of the year, Ratnagiri is the practical pick.
Delivery to Mumbai
Fruit leaves the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. Air-conditioned vehicles carry it 10–12 hours to our Mumbai packhouse, where it rests for 24–48 hours on a hay bed — natural ripening only, no gas, no chambers. From there, dispatch is by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.
Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive the journey, ripe enough to eat within three days of delivery. If you receive transit-damaged or quality-failed fruit, photograph or video it and send the evidence on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. We will dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next purchase. No physical return is required.
The 5-ply corrugated box (130 gsm, courier-grade) carries transit pressure through its 12-slot partition, not through the fruit. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (50–55 mm flat width) on a hay bed. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow steady so condensation does not trigger surface mould. We do not ship fresh Alphonso July to January — there is no fruit to send.

Where the Fruit Comes From
Prashant Powle sources from 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad. In Ratnagiri taluka: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Mirya, Kalbadevi, Majgaon, Kasheli and Adi. In Devgad taluka: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre, Kanyabag, Padel, Girye, Rameshwar, Waghotan, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav, Katwan, Aare, Shirgaon, Tambaldeg, Ilve, Munge, Khavane, Tiravade, Koregaon, Baparde and Mandivali.
The partner network is 100+ farmer families. Orchards are typically 12–25 years old, selected for Brix consistency, tree longevity and alternate-bearing management. Cultivation follows strict SOPs from flowering to harvest — which natural sprays and fertilisers are used is decided well before the fruit sets. That discipline shows in the lab: Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284), tested a full residue panel on 1 April 2025 — all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits, 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification at 0.01 mg/kg.
Harvesting is by hand, using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera is used. This matters for Alphonso because a bruise from a fall shows up as a black lenticel mark within 48 hours — the same marks that convince buyers a mango has been mishandled.
Season and Availability
What is the best time to buy Alphonso mangoes in Mumbai?
The season runs February to June. Peak is March to May — this is when Brix sits at 18–24° consistently, fruit weight hits the upper grades, and supply is reliable enough for same-week dispatch. By mid-June, fruit from most villages has been harvested and the season closes. We sell nothing July to January; no stored or cold-room Alphonso is sold as fresh fruit.
When can I order Alphonso mangoes for Mumbai delivery?
Ordering opens when the 2027 season starts on 1 February 2027. Fresh mangoes are out of stock until then. You can cancel an order any time before dispatch — not after. This matters because the season window is short and high-grade fruit from specific villages like Golap or Jamsande can sell out within days of availability.
Ripening, Grading and Safety
Every fruit is weighed and graded. AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal problems (spongy tissue) and external deformities before packing. The scan is not decorative — spongy tissue is invisible to the eye and shows up only under near-infrared imaging. Fruit that fails the scan does not leave the packhouse.
Ripening at the Mumbai packhouse is natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial agents. The 24–48 hours on hay is monitored; it is not gas-triggered. Post-harvest cooling at the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, followed by hot-water treatment, reduces surface issues and extends shelf life before the fruit even reaches Mumbai.
Why does carbide ripening matter for Mumbai buyers?
Calcium carbide generates acetylene gas, which forces a mango to yellow on the outside while the pulp stays underripe and acidic inside. The fruit also carries calcium and arsenic residues on the skin. It is illegal under the FSSAI's Prevention of Food Adulteration rules. Much of what is sold at Dadar and Crawford market in Mumbai as "Hapus" has no GI documentation and may be carbide-ripened. The way to verify: ask for the Authorised User number. Ours is AU/5974/GI/139/260.
Nutrition
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a polyphenol concentrated in Alphonso pulp, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study by Govindappa et al. (2011). Alphonso puree is suitable as a first food for babies from about 6 months — treat that as a serving suggestion, not medical advice.
One thing the nutrition data does not capture: a 24°-Brix Devgad mango from Kunkeshwar in late April tastes categorically different from the same variety sold at 16° Brix after weeks in cold storage. The season constraint is not a limitation — it is the point.

People Also Ask
How much does 1 kg of Alphonso mango cost?
Alphonso mango prices on alphonsomango.in depend on variety, weight grade and box size — half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen. Ratnagiri boxes range ₹1,849 to ₹5,399 and Devgad boxes ₹1,849 to ₹5,499. Choose your grade first — weight grade determines both the price per box and the number of fruit you receive.
Which place is famous for Alphonso mangoes?
Ratnagiri and Devgad in coastal Maharashtra are the two places most closely associated with Alphonso mangoes. Both carry GI Tag No. 139. Ratnagiri district and Sindhudurg district (where Devgad sits) together define the official GI zone. Fruit from sea-facing villages like Jamsande, Kunkeshwar, Pawas and Golap is considered the benchmark.
Which Alphonso mango is best in India?
Devgad Alphonso is widely regarded as the sweetest, with Brix typically at the upper end of the 18–24° range and a deep saffron colour. Ratnagiri Alphonso is equally GI-certified and arrives earlier in the season — reliable from March — making it the practical choice when you want the first fruit of the year. Both carry GI Tag No. 139.
Repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows Mumbai buyers lean Devgad, while north India leans Ratnagiri.
What is the most famous mango variety in Mumbai?
Alphonso — called Hapus in Marathi — is the most famous mango variety in Mumbai. It grows in Ratnagiri and Devgad, both within a day's drive of the city, which is why Mumbai gets the fruit at peak ripeness. Repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows Mumbai buyers lean toward Devgad Alphonso over Ratnagiri.
Devgad orchards at Jamsande and Kunkeshwar, sea-facing and 12–25 years old, produce a slightly deeper saffron colour and — in most seasons — a touch more sweetness that Mumbai households recognise immediately.
Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the yield crisis facing GI-certified Alphonso growers: Famous Alphonso mango is facing existential crisis this year.
