Mumbai knows the Alphonso better than most cities. The Devgad coast is four hours south. Ratnagiri is six. Yet the fruit that arrives at your door from most vendors in the city has been through a carbide chamber, a cold-store, or both. We do neither.

Delivery to Mumbai

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive the courier but close enough to full ripeness that it softens within about three days of delivery. We do not dispatch over-ripe fruit hoping it survives; we dispatch fruit calibrated for transit.

From harvest in Devgad or Ratnagiri, the fruit reaches the Mumbai packhouse in roughly 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle. It spends 24–48 hours on a hay bed there, under natural conditions, then goes out with BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — whichever courier covers your Mumbai pin code. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.

The box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (CFB) box with a 12-slot partition that takes the transit pressure instead of the fruit. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm). Six air holes, top and bottom, keep airflow going during ripening. This matters specifically for Alphonso because the lenticels — the small dots on the skin — blacken when rubbed. The foam net prevents that friction entirely.

If a fruit arrives damaged or fails on quality, photograph or video it and send that to us on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. We send a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next order. You do not need to return anything.

Where the Fruit Comes From

Prashant Powle built the sourcing network village by village from 2017. Today it spans 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg (Devgad) districts. In the Devgad taluka alone, fruit comes from orchards in Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Kunkeshwar, Mithbav and 18 other villages. On the Ratnagiri side, Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mirya and Kasheli are part of the regular network, alongside villages as far south as Velas and Anjarle in Rajapur and Mandangad talukas.

The orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, and selected on three things: consistent Brix across the season, tree longevity, and how the farmer manages alternate-bearing years. We work with 100+ partner farmer families. Cultivation follows strict SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are applied from flowering to harvest — not organic certification in the legal sense, but a documented and verified practice.

Packing happens at two points before the fruit reaches Mumbai: our Malvan packing centre (Sindhudurg) and a Devgad packing point. Both are temperature-controlled. The move from either point to Mumbai is by air-conditioned vehicle, 10–12 hours overnight. The total time from tree to dispatch is 48–72 hours.

How We Ripen the Mangoes

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours the fruit spends at the Mumbai packhouse is ripening on hay, monitored, not gas-triggered.

This is worth understanding precisely because Mumbai's wholesale market runs almost entirely on carbide. Calcium carbide forces colour and softness but does not build sugar or aroma — it mimics ripeness optically. Hay-bed ripening lets the fruit's own ethylene accumulate gradually, converting starch to sugar and developing the ester compounds that give Alphonso its specific fragrance. The Brix difference is measurable: naturally ripened fruit from our network reads 18–24° depending on variety and week of season. A carbide-forced mango from the same orchard, picked a week early, reads lower and tastes thinner.

Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL-accredited, certificate TC-8284) tested our fruit through the 2025 season. Certificate 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025: all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, read 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We do not claim pesticide-free — one residue was detected, within limits. The panel did not test for calcium carbide; the carbide-free claim rests on our process, not this report.

Grading and Quality Checks

Every fruit is weighed and graded. AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal deformities — specifically spongy tissue, which can develop invisibly inside an otherwise perfect-looking fruit — and for external marks before packing. We built this step because spongy tissue is the single most common quality complaint on Alphonso, and visual inspection alone misses it.

Harvest uses a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera identifies the right fruit before the cutter reaches it. A dropped mango bruises at the stem end. That bruise becomes a rot point within 48 hours. Avoiding it at the tree is the only way to prevent it.

Post-harvest cooling happens at the packhouse before transport. A controlled hot-water treatment after harvest reduces surface issues and extends shelf life.

Storage After Delivery

What to do when your box arrives

Open the box. Check the fruit. If anything looks wrong, photograph it immediately and message us on WhatsApp — you have 24 hours from delivery to report an issue.

If the fruit is firm (dispatched at 70–80% ripeness, as intended), leave it at room temperature on the hay or foam netting it came in. It will ripen fully within about three days. Do not refrigerate unripe Alphonso — cold halts the ripening process and damages the texture. Once fully soft and aromatic, refrigerate and consume within two days.

Can you freeze Alphonso?

Yes. Peel, slice or scoop into a container and freeze. The frozen pulp works well in smoothies, Aamras and desserts. Texture suffers but flavour holds better than with most fruit.

Season and Availability

When is Alphonso mango season in Mumbai?

February to June (the 2027 season starts on 1 February 2027), with the main harvest and peak supply in March, April and May. By late June the orchards are finished. We sell no fresh Alphonso between July and January.

The 2025 season was difficult. Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the weather and yield pressures — the article ran under the headline "Famous Alphonso mango is facing existential crisis this year." Unseasonal rain during flowering and irregular temperatures across Ratnagiri and Devgad cut volumes across the region. Years like that push up prices for genuine GI fruit and push out substitute varieties that vendors pass off as Hapus. Knowing your source matters more in a thin year than in a good one.

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?

18–24° at full ripeness. Devgad fruit typically reads at the upper end of that range. Brix is not a quality guarantee on its own — a mango can be 24° and still fibrous or poorly textured if harvested too early — but a consistent reading above 20° in April is a reliable indicator of a good season and proper orchard management.

People Also Ask

What is the price of 1 kg of Alphonso mango in India?

Alphonso mango prices vary by grade, origin, and season. At AlphonsoMango.in, see the current price on the product page; it depends on whether you choose Ratnagiri or Devgad fruit and the weight grade: Small (150–180 g), Medium, Extra Large, or Jumbo (275–300 g).

Prices at roadside vendors in Mumbai during peak April–May can be lower but rarely include GI-certified sourcing, graded fruit, or hay-bed ripening.

Which city is famous for Alphonso Mango in India?

Ratnagiri and Devgad are the towns most associated with Alphonso mango — both hold GI No. 139 and sit in the Konkan coast belt of Maharashtra. Mumbai is the biggest trading and consuming city, just four to six hours from the orchards, and has historically been the gateway through which Hapus reaches the rest of India.

Most of the 47,000+ customers AlphonsoMango.in has served since 2020 order from metro cities, with Mumbai and its surrounding pin codes leading demand each season.

Which mango is famous in Mumbai?

Alphonso — locally called Hapus — is the mango Mumbai is most identified with. Sourced from Ratnagiri and Devgad, roughly four to six hours from the city, it appears at Mumbai's roadside stalls every April. Devgad Alphonso in particular is the variety Mumbai buyers reorder most, according to reorder data from AlphonsoMango.in across 47,000+ customers.

Devgad fruit tends toward sweeter, slightly thicker pulp and typically scores at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range — two traits Mumbai buyers consistently prefer.

Are Alphonso mangoes Indian?

Yes, Alphonso mangoes are Indian — specifically from the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. Both Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso hold GI Tag No. 139 under India's Geographical Indications of Goods Act, confirming their origin in those two districts. Despite the Portuguese name, the variety was developed and perfected over centuries by Konkan farmers.

The GI registration means only fruit grown in the notified Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts and packed by authorised users — like Powle Home Foods (AU/5974/GI/139/260) — can legally carry the Alphonso GI tag.
