Devgad Hapus amba: one mango, many spellings
Search for this mango and you will meet a handful of spellings: Devgad Hapus, Devghad Hapus, Devgad Hapus aam, Devgad Hapus amba and, in Marathi, देवगड हापूस आंबा. They all point to the same fruit, the Alphonso mango grown in Devgad taluka of Sindhudurg district on the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. Amba and aam both mean mango, and Hapus is the Marathi name for Alphonso.

Why Devgad has a name of its own
Devgad sits on the Sindhudurg coast. According to Wikipedia, the taluka has 98 villages and is known for exports of its locally grown Alphonso. The Alphonso variety itself is named after Afonso de Albuquerque, and mango grafting was introduced in Portuguese Goa by Jesuit missionaries. Named varieties such as Alphonso are propagated by grafting, because mango cultivars of the Indian group do not come true from seed.
The Geographical Indications Registry of India lists Devgad Alphonso Mango as application 379, merged with the Alphonso Mango application 139, which is why you will see GI No. 139 on Konkan Alphonso. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). Our own sourcing runs across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt, and Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso are the same variety. We do not rank one above the other. Ways to enjoy Devgad Hapus
Alphonso pulp is described as rich, creamy and non-fibrous, which is why it suits several simple dishes:
- Fresh slices. Cut a ripe mango into neat slices and serve them on a plate. Our guide to cutting a mango shows the cuts.
- Aamras. Puree ripe pulp with a pinch of cardamom and serve it with hot puri. Follow our aamras recipe.
- Mango lassi. Blend pulp with chilled yoghurt and a little sugar.

What to know about the fruit itself
Alphonso fruit generally weighs 150 to 300 g, and, according to Wikipedia, it takes about 15 days from harvest to ripening. That is one reason a box should not be rushed. Alphonso can also develop spongy tissue, an internal flesh disorder that cannot be seen from the skin. ICAR-IIHR research traced it to the seed shifting into germination mode at about 60% fruit maturity. No seller can promise that a whole box is free of it, so buy from someone who explains how they grade and pack, and report any problem fruit within 24 hours of delivery.

Storing the box
Keep the mangoes at room temperature, out of direct sun, until they smell sweet near the stalk and give slightly under the thumb. Do not refrigerate unripe fruit. Once ripe, eat within a short while or chill it briefly. If any fruit is damaged in transit, report it within 24 hours of delivery.
