We source from 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad. Prashant Powle selects each lot personally, grading by Brix (minimum 20, peak grade hits 18 to 24), weight, and skin colour. Carbide never enters our cold chain. Every box ships by BlueDart air — the same courier we use for exports to Japan and the UAE.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad — Which to Choose

Feature Ratnagiri Alphonso Devgad Alphonso
Brix (sugar level) 20–22 22–24
Peak season March–May April–June
Typical weight per fruit 150–250 g 200–300 g
Skin colour at ripeness Golden yellow Deep saffron-yellow
Fibre Fibreless Fibreless
GI protected Yes — GI No. 139 Yes — GI No. 139
Indicative price (per dozen) ₹600–₹1,200 ₹800–₹1,800

Devgad fruit ripens later and holds higher Brix consistently — that is why it commands a premium. Ratnagiri arrives earlier in March and suits buyers who want the season's first box.

Alphonso Mango in Asansol and Assam

People searching "aasam" for mangoes are often looking for two different things — Alphonso reaching Asansol in West Bengal, or Alphonso shipping to Assam in the Northeast. We serve both. BlueDart reaches Asansol and Guwahati in 2–3 days from our Mumbai dispatch hub.

Asansol sits at the western edge of West Bengal, and Assam's major cities — Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat — are a flight away from Mumbai. Both regions share one problem: local Alphonso is fake. What you find in local Asansol markets labelled "Hapus" is almost always a different variety ripened with calcium carbide. The difference is immediate when you eat the real thing. Carbide-ripened fruit has chalky flesh at the stone and a chemical aftertaste. A genuine Devgad Alphonso, ripened in hay, has flesh so orange-yellow it looks like set custard, and the saffron aroma hits you the moment you open the box.

47,000 customers across India have ordered from us since 2019. A meaningful share come from eastern India — they tell us the same thing: they had never tasted real Hapus until it arrived at their door.

How to Verify Genuine Alphonso

Check three things. First, the sap stain at the stem end — genuine Konkan Alphonso shows a dry, clean stem scar, not a wet or black one. Second, the skin: it should feel slightly waxy, not artificially shiny. Third, Brix above 20 means you taste the difference on the first bite — no sourness, no fibrous pull, just clean sweetness with a hint of citrus.

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?

Devgad Alphonso at full ripeness measures 18 to 24 Brix. Ratnagiri fruit from the same season runs 18 to 24 Brix. Both exceed the 18-Brix minimum that GI certification demands for export-grade fruit.

Where These Mangoes Come From

Alphonso mango orchards in Konkan Maharashtra — source villages for AlphonsoMango.in

Our sourcing covers 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad talukas in Konkan, Maharashtra. Villages like Velneshwar, Pawas, and Malvan supply Ratnagiri fruit; Devgad taluka's laterite-clay soil gives Devgad Alphonso its darker flesh colour and higher Brix. The laterite holds heat through the night and drains quickly after rain — that thermal cycling is what concentrates sugar in the fruit. No irrigation can replicate it.

Prashant Powle built the sourcing network starting in 2019, working directly with farmers who have grown Alphonso for three generations. The GI Authorisation (AU/5974/GI/139/260, Registry cert 4163, issued 16.10.2019) covers fruit from these exact geographies. Fruit from outside this zone cannot legally carry the Ratnagiri or Devgad Alphonso GI tag.

What Does GI-Tagged Mean for Alphonso Mango?

GI No. 139 protects Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri and Devgad under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999. It means the variety, the geography, and the cultivation method are legally defined. A mango grown elsewhere cannot carry this tag. AlphonsoMango.in holds GI Authorised User status AU/5974/GI/139/260 — one of the few online retailers that can make this claim with a certificate number.

How We Ripen Them

Mangoes leave the orchard at the mature-green stage — firm enough to travel by air without bruising. We pack them in hay beds inside double-wall corrugated boxes. The hay absorbs ethylene the fruit naturally emits and distributes warmth evenly. No carbide, no ethylene sachets, no gas chambers.

When your box arrives, the fruit will be firm or just beginning to give. Leave it at room temperature for 1–2 days. Do not refrigerate unripe fruit — cold slows ripening unevenly and kills aroma compounds. Once the skin turns fully golden and the stem end yields slightly to pressure, eat it the same day. Refrigerate only fully ripe fruit, and eat within 2 days of chilling.

How Long Do Alphonso Mangoes Stay Fresh?

At room temperature (26–30°C), ripe Alphonso holds for 2–3 days. Refrigerated below 12°C after full ripening, it stays good for up to 5 days. Never refrigerate green fruit — chilling injury sets in below 10°C and the flesh turns grey-brown at the stone.

Other Names for Alphonso Mango

The same fruit travels under many names across India and among search engines. Knowing them helps you buy the right thing regardless of how you typed the query.

  • Hapus / Hapoos — Marathi name, used across Maharashtra and by Konkan farmers
  • Alphonso / Alphonzo / Alfanso / Alphanso — anglicised variants; all refer to the same GI variety
  • अल्फांसो आम — Hindi
  • हापूस आंबा — Marathi, used in Konkan orchards and Pune markets
  • আম (aam) / mæŋɡəʊ — Assamese and Bengali; the word "aasam" in search often reflects this phonetic spelling
  • Mangifera indica — biological name, species shared by all mango varieties
  • Aasam — phonetic search variant combining "aam" (mango) and "Assam" (the state), or a misspelling of Assam

When someone types "aasam" they are almost always asking one of three questions: where to buy Alphonso in Assam, whether Alphonso delivers to Asansol, or what the local mango of Assam is called. We answer all three: yes to delivery in Assam and Asansol, and the local Assamese mango is Mangifera indica var. local — good but not the same as GI Alphonso from Konkan.

Nutrition and Health

One 150 g Devgad Alphonso (flesh only) gives approximately 90 kcal, 23 g carbohydrate, 20 g natural sugars (at 22 Brix), 2.6 g dietary fibre, 60 mg Vitamin C (67% of Indian RDA), and 1,262 IU Vitamin A. It is not a low-sugar fruit — diabetics should limit portion size. That is the honest limit.

The saffron colour in Alphonso flesh comes from beta-carotene concentration. Devgad fruit has deeper colour than most other Indian varieties because the laterite soil and coastal humidity accelerate carotenoid synthesis in the final two weeks before harvest. You can see it when you cut the fruit — the flesh is closer to orange than yellow.

Does Alphonso Mango Have More Vitamin C Than Other Varieties?

Yes. Published data from the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN, Hyderabad, 2017 food composition tables) puts Alphonso at 44 mg Vitamin C per 100 g — higher than Langra (16 mg) and Dasheri (13 mg). The GI-zone growing conditions, not just genetics, influence this figure.
