What Devgad Hapus is

Hapus is the Marathi name for Alphonso, and Devgad Hapus means Alphonso grown in Devgad. Devgad is a taluka in Sindhudurg district on the Konkan coast. Wikipedia lists 98 villages in it and notes that it is known for exports of locally grown Alphonso mangoes. When people in Pune ask for Devgad Hapus, they are asking for that origin, not for a different variety.

The name carries weight in the market, so it is also used loosely. A shop in Pune may label fruit Devgad Hapus without being able to say where it was grown. That is why this page spends as much time on how to check as on how to order. We are Powle Home Foods, a Mumbai business run by Prashant Powle, and we source fruit across 48 villages of the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt on the Konkan coast. We have sold mangoes online since 2020, and we have served 47,000+ customers, including offline and marketplace sales.

Our Devgad Alphonso

The Devgad Alphonso product is sold by the dozen in several grades. Prices start from Rs 1,849 per dozen and go up to Rs 5,499 for the largest option, and the product page shows the current figure. A dozen weighs roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg depending on the grade, which is why we price by the dozen and not by the kilo.

Our harvest is done at Brahma Muhurta, the pre-dawn hour. The fruit is hand-harvested with a zela pole fitted with a catching net, so it is not shaken down or dropped. That detail is on our Brand Facts page, where you can also read our certificate details.

Pune is about 149 km from Mumbai by road, and fruit reaches Pune by courier after it leaves us. For the wider picture of buying in the city, from rates to local markets, read our guide to Alphonso mangoes in Pune. It is a different page: this one is about Devgad origin specifically.

Checking you have real Devgad Hapus

You cannot prove origin from the skin, so rely on documents and plain answers. Ask the seller which taluka the fruit came from. Ask whether they hold a GI Authorised User certificate and what its number is. Ask how the fruit was ripened and what one dozen weighs.

Alphonso from the Ratnagiri and Devgad belt is GI-tagged in India. The public GI Registry record for application 379 shows Devgad Alphonso Mango merged with application 139. We hold GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260 (GI No. 139). Be wary of a seller who answers every question with "it is original" and gives no number.

We do not use carbide. Our Alphonso mangoes are ripened naturally on hay beds. Selling fruit ripened with carbide gas is prohibited in India under Regulation 2.3.5 of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. Colour and smell give only a rough clue, not proof, and the bucket test is the same. Our page on how to identify authentic Hapus lists the questions to ask.

Choosing a grade for your Pune table

Grade is about fruit size, and size changes the price of a dozen more than anything else. Smaller fruit suits everyday eating and children. Larger fruit looks better in a gift box and gives more flesh per mango, which matters if you are slicing for a dessert. Because a dozen can weigh anywhere from roughly 1.8 to 3.3 kg, decide how many people you are feeding before you pick, and remember that ripe Alphonso keeps for only a few days.

If you plan to cook with mango, the pulp tin is the easier route. It is Alphonso pulp, ready for aamras, shrikhand or a milkshake, and it is available when fresh fruit is not.

Ripening Devgad Hapus at home

Mangoes are shipped slightly firm, so the last stretch of ripening happens in your kitchen. Wikipedia puts the time from harvest to ripening of Alphonso at about 15 days, so a box that reaches you soon after dispatch still has some days to go.

Devgad Hapus Amba ripening naturally on hay — how to ripen at home
  • Keep the fruit in a single layer at room temperature, in the shade.
  • Do not refrigerate firm mangoes.
  • Smell the stalk end daily. A sweet, fruity smell means the fruit is close.
  • Press gently at the shoulder. A ripe fruit gives slightly.
  • Refrigerate only ripe fruit you cannot finish, and eat it soon.

Pune summers can reach about 42 degrees Celsius, so ripening can be quick in warm rooms. Check the box every day. Our how to ripen Alphonso at home page has the method in full.

Season and off-season

Alphonso is harvested from about February to June, with the best supply from March to May. The 2027 season opens on 1 February 2027. Outside the season we do not sell fresh Alphonso. The Alphonso Mango Pulp Tin is available all year in 850 g and 3.1 kg tins, from Rs 590.
