Both varieties are sourced from 48 coastal villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad talukas — including orchards in Velas and Pawas in Ratnagiri district. We assumed Devgad always commanded a premium; the per-kilo grading table shows the difference at the lower grades is under ₹50, which surprised us too.
Delivery to Bhubaneswar
Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes. The mangoes travel in corrugated double-walled boxes lined with natural hay — the same hay-bed ripening medium used at the orchard. This keeps the fruit at the right ambient temperature during transit without refrigeration.
We do not ship to Bhubaneswar or anywhere else from July through January. The orchards are quiet. Any site claiming carbide-free Alphonso Hapus in August is not selling what it claims.

Alphonso Mango in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar is Odisha's capital — a city of ancient temples like the Lingaraja and the rising offices of IT parks and corporate campuses in Infocity. People here know their food. Odia cuisine is built around precision: the right rice, the right mustard, the right seasonal fruit. That sensibility makes Bhubaneswar one of the more discerning markets for Alphonso during mango season.
The problem is local availability. What gets sold as "Alphonso" in most Bhubaneswar markets is either a local Odia variety mislabelled or, worse, a carbide-ripened fruit from another region passed off as Hapus. We have had customers from Bhubaneswar write to us describing fruit that turned yellow outside while staying hard and sour inside — classic carbide ripening. That does not happen with hay-bed ripened Konkan Alphonso.
What Makes Bhubaneswar Customers Choose Us?
Of our 47,000+ customers since 2019, a meaningful segment comes from eastern India — Odisha, West Bengal, Bihar — where the local Alphonso supply chain is weakest. They order online because the alternative is unreliable. When a Bhubaneswar customer receives a box from us, the fruit is already hay-ripened, at the right eating stage, with the characteristic saffron-yellow skin and the fibre-free, custardy pulp that defines genuine Hapus.
Where the Fruit Comes From
48 Villages Across Ratnagiri and Devgad
Every mango we ship originates from one of 48 villages in Ratnagiri and Devgad talukas along the Konkan coast. The laterite soil here — locally called murrum — combined with the salt-laden sea breeze from the Arabian Sea gives the fruit its defining Brix level. Orchards in villages like Rajapur, Pawas and Devgad-adjacent coastal zones consistently grade higher than inland Maharashtra Alphonso. Prashant Powle, who founded AlphonsoMango.in and oversees sourcing personally, has worked with farmers in these villages since before the brand launched in 2019.
Why the Konkan Geography Cannot Be Replicated
The GI tag exists precisely because the terroir matters. GI No. 139, under which we hold authorisation AU/5974/GI/139/260 (Registry certificate 4163, issued 16 October 2019), restricts the "Alphonso" designation to fruit grown in specific Konkan talukas. A mango grown in Nashik or Aurangabad cannot legally carry this tag, regardless of the variety. When you search for mango near me and land on a local Bhubaneswar shop claiming GI Alphonso, ask for the GI authorisation number. Most cannot produce one.
How to Identify Genuine Hapus Aam
Skin Colour
Genuine carbide-free Alphonso ripens from the stem end downward. The colour transitions from pale green at the base to deep saffron-yellow at the crown — not a uniform yellow across the whole fruit. Carbide-ripened fruit goes yellow-all-over in 18–24 hours and the skin feels unnaturally tight.
Aroma
Cut a naturally ripened Alphonso and the room fills with a floral, slightly saffron-like scent. Carbide-treated fruit smells flat or faintly chemical near the cut. This is the simplest test anyone can do at home.
Pulp Texture
Alphonso pulp should be fibre-free, bright orange-yellow and hold its shape when sliced. If the pulp is stringy, pale yellow or watery, it is not Hapus — or it was picked too early and force-ripened.
What is the Brix Level of Devgad Alphonso?
Devgad Alphonso from our orchards measures 18 to 24° Brix at eating maturity. Ratnagiri Alphonso from the same season runs 18 to 24°. Both are well above the 18° threshold that most food scientists use to define a premium dessert mango.
Natural Ripening: No Carbide
After harvest, the mangoes are placed in natural hay beds — the traditional Konkan practice called pachavna. The hay provides even, gentle warmth that allows ethylene to build naturally inside the fruit. The entire ripening cycle takes 4–7 days depending on the grade and ambient temperature at the orchard. We never use calcium carbide, ethephon spray or any artificial ripening agent. FSSAI 10020022011783 covers our food safety compliance; APEDA 225579 covers our export authorisation.

Season, Storage and What Happens After June
When Is Alphonso Mango Season?
The Alphonso season in Konkan runs approximately February to June (the 2027 season starts on 1 February 2027). The first arrivals — small, highly aromatic fruit called pahili amba — reach us in March. Peak volume and best grades appear in April and May. By mid-June, the crop is exhausted and we stop taking orders. There is no workaround for this. We do not freeze, cold-store and re-sell Alphonso from last season as "fresh."
How Long Do the Mangoes Keep After Delivery?
At room temperature (24–28°C, typical Bhubaneswar summer), the mangoes will be at perfect eating stage 1–2 days after arrival. You can slow this by storing them in a cool, ventilated spot — not the refrigerator, which halts ripening and dulls the flavour. If you must refrigerate, do so only after the mango is fully ripe and eat within 24 hours of bringing it out.
What to Do July–January
We offer Alphonso aamras, mango pulp and frozen pulp variants during the off-season. These use fruit processed at peak ripeness in May and June. They are not a substitute for fresh Hapus, but they are the closest you get outside season. We also stock cashews, Ajwa dates and saffron from Pampore, Kashmir year-round.
Nutrition and Brix
What Are the Health Benefits of Alphonso Mango?
One 200 g serving of Alphonso provides roughly 135 kcal, 33 g carbohydrates, 30 mg vitamin C (about 30% of the daily requirement for an adult), and meaningful beta-carotene — the pigment responsible for the deep orange pulp colour. The Brix level (20–24°) reflects natural sugar concentration, not added sweetener. Alphonso at 22° Brix is sweeter than most stone fruits but the glycaemic load per serving is moderate because of fibre and water content.
Is Alphonso Mango Good for Diabetics?
We are not in a position to give clinical dietary advice. What we know from our own grading practice: a fully ripe Alphonso at 22° Brix has a glycaemic index estimated at 51–55 (low-to-medium range), comparable to a banana. Anyone managing blood sugar should speak to their doctor about portion size.
