Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Order?

Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is in character, not quality. Ratnagiri Alphonso tends to be firmer on arrival — useful if your delivery adds a day. Devgad fruit, from orchards right on the Sindhudurg coastline, usually lands at the higher end of the 18–24° Brix scale and has a slightly richer, oilier pulp. Repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri; Mumbai leans Devgad. Hyderabad buyers are split.

Delivery to Hyderabad

We ship to Hyderabad via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — the courier is assigned by your pin code. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes. Harvest to dispatch takes 48–72 hours (about 2 hours from tree to packhouse, 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai, then 24–48 hours of hay-bed ripening).

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness. It ripens fully within about three days of delivery. Do not refrigerate before it is ripe — Hyderabad's warm weather actually helps. Once ripe, refrigerate and consume within two days.

Packaging: a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box with a 12-slot partition (the partition carries transit pressure, not the fruit), every mango in a foam-net sleeve that prevents the lenticels from blackening due to friction. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow going during the final ripening stage after delivery.

If any fruit arrives damaged or fails on quality, photograph or video it and send the evidence on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. No physical return is needed. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next purchase.

How to Order

  1. Select your grade. Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849 to ₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849 to ₹5,499) on the product page, then pick your size grade — Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g) — and your box count: half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen.
  2. Add to cart and complete checkout. Enter your Hyderabad delivery address and pin code; the system assigns the right courier automatically.
  3. We dispatch within 48–72 hours of harvest via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.

Where These Mangoes Come From

Alphonso mangoes from Konkan farms delivered online in Hyderabad

We source from 48 coastal villages of Ratnagiri and Devgad. In Ratnagiri taluka that includes Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange and Mirya. In Devgad taluka, sea-facing orchards in Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav and Hindale. Our 100+ partner farmer families tend orchards that are typically 12–25 years old, selected for Brix consistency and careful alternate-bearing management.

Prashant Powle, who founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017, selects each partner orchard personally. Every fruit is hand-harvested using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net — the tree is never shaken, and fruit never drops. For taller trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera locates the stem before the cut. That matters: a bruised stem leaks latex onto neighbouring fruit in the box.

After harvest, the fruit goes through post-harvest hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues, then cooling at the packhouse before the 10–12 hour air-conditioned road journey to Mumbai. Every mango is weighed, graded, and scanned by AI/ML-assisted machine vision that checks for spongy tissue and external deformities before packing. We have served 47,000+ customers since the first full commercial season in 2020, and 46% of them reorder.

What does GI No. 139 mean for a Hyderabad buyer?

GI No. 139 is the Geographical Indication covering Alphonso mangoes from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Powle Home Foods holds GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019, with Authorised User numbers AU/5974/GI/139/260 (Ratnagiri) and AU/6932 (Devgad). A box without these credentials on the label is not certified Alphonso under the GI scheme, regardless of what the seller calls it. The Ratnagiri Alphonso also won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — a district-product award, not one specific to us, but it reflects the standing of the fruit.

No Carbide, No Ethylene — How We Ripen

At the Mumbai packhouse, mangoes rest on a hay bed for 24–48 hours in temperature-controlled rooms. This is the traditional Aadi method. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agent of any kind. The hay absorbs excess moisture and maintains even airflow around each fruit.

We test residues weekly through the season. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284; report 01/ETHAP2500044, 5 April 2025) tested 28 pesticide residues. All 28 were within Codex maximum residue limits. Twenty-seven of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). The one detected residue, thiamethoxam, came in at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — not "pesticide-free," because one residue was detected within limits.

What we do not do: we do not sell fresh Alphonso from July to January. The season ends in June. Any seller claiming to ship fresh Alphonso to Hyderabad in August or October is selling something else.

Season Window and When to Order

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak availability March to May. Demand in Hyderabad spikes in April and boxes at the Jumbo grade (275–300 g) sell out first. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

If you are ordering as a gift — 18% of our orders are gifts — allow an extra day and choose a delivery date before the recipient's event, not on it. A one-day buffer removes anxiety.

What You Are Eating

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a xanthone compound in Alphonso pulp, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study by Govindappa et al. (2011). Alphonso pulp is suitable as a first food for babies from about six months — but treat that as a serving suggestion, not medical advice.

Devgad fruit at peak season, sourced from orchards in Jamsande and Vijaydurg, tends toward the 22–24° Brix end of the range. That is noticeably sweeter than most commercial mango varieties sold in Hyderabad markets, where Banganapalli and Totapuri dominate the retail bins.

People Also Ask

Which mango is famous in Hyderabad?

Banginapalli (also called Safeda) is the mango most associated with Hyderabad — grown in Andhra Pradesh and widely sold in city markets every summer. Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad is the other mango Hyderabad buyers actively seek, prized for its 18–24° Brix sweetness, saffron-coloured pulp and GI-certified origin from Konkan, Maharashtra.

Hyderabad buyers order Alphonso online because local market supply is inconsistent and carbide ripening is common — a GI-certified, hay-bed ripened box is harder to find in stores.

Are mangoes available now in Hyderabad?

Alphonso mango season runs February to June, peaking March to May. Outside that window — July through January — no fresh Alphonso is dispatched from our packhouse, and local Hyderabad markets rely mainly on Banginapalli and other regional varieties. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

Hyderabad orders typically ship within 48–72 hours of harvest once the season opens.

Is there a mango farm near Hyderabad?

Andhra Pradesh has commercial mango orchards, and Banginapalli farms operate within a few hours of Hyderabad. The Alphonso variety, however, does not grow near Hyderabad — it needs the laterite soil, coastal humidity and specific microclimate of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in Konkan, Maharashtra, roughly 700 km away.

Farms in Pawas, Golap, Jamsande and Vijaydurg — sea-facing orchards typically 12–25 years old — are where the Alphonso we ship to Hyderabad actually comes from.

Are Alphonso and Banginapalli the same?

Alphonso and Banginapalli are two distinct mango varieties with different origins, flavour profiles and textures. Alphonso grows in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, holds GI No. 139, and has saffron-yellow, fiberless pulp with a Brix of 18–24°. Banginapalli grows in Andhra Pradesh, is larger, pale yellow, mildly sweet and widely available in Hyderabad markets.

The two are sometimes confused in Hyderabad because sellers occasionally mislabel Banginapalli as Alphonso — checking for GI No. 139 on the box label is the quickest way to tell the difference.
