Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Grade Suits You?

Both varieties carry GI No. 139. The difference shows up in the orchard microclimate. Ratnagiri orchards sit inland from the coast; Devgad trees grow on sea-facing laterite soil in Sindhudurg, and fruit from villages like Devgad, Jamsande and Vijaydurg routinely hits the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range. Our repeat-order data bears this out: customers in north India tend to re-order Ratnagiri, while Mumbai buyers lean Devgad.

Delivery Across India

Fruit leaves the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. Air-conditioned vehicles bring it to the Mumbai packhouse in 10–12 hours. After 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening there, it is packed and dispatched by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Metro cities receive fruit within 20–24 hours of dispatch; most other cities within 1–3 days. We service 15,000–17,000 pin codes across India.

Each box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard courier box with a 12-slot partition and six air holes. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) on a hay bed. The partition carries transit pressure so the fruit does not. Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed against neighbouring fruit — the foam net prevents exactly that.

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness. It will ripen fully within about three days of delivery. Do not refrigerate until fully ripe.

How to Identify Genuine Alphonso Mangoes

Indian Hapus Alphonso mangoes from Konkan — natural ripening, no carbide

Genuine Alphonso from Konkan has a thin, smooth skin that turns a deep saffron-yellow at full ripeness, not a uniform painted orange. The stem end shows a small, clean scar from careful hand-harvesting with a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net. The tree is never shaken; fruit never falls. A mango that rolled off the tree and was picked from the ground is already bruised at the cell level even if the skin looks fine.

At AlphonsoMango.in, every fruit is weighed, graded and scanned by an AI/ML-assisted machine that checks for internal issues including spongy tissue and external deformities before packing. A Ratnagiri Alphonso with spongy tissue looks perfect outside and tastes fermented inside — the scanner rejects it before it reaches your box.

What is spongy tissue in Alphonso mango and how do you avoid it?

Spongy tissue is an internal disorder where part of the pulp fails to ripen uniformly, turning white, spongy and tasteless while the exterior looks normal. It is linked to heat stress during fruit development. Our machine scanning at the Malvan packing centre and Devgad packing point rejects affected fruit before dispatch. No visual check at home can catch it — scanner rejection before packing is the only reliable filter.

Natural Hay-Bed Ripening: What It Means

We use natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay, monitored, not gas-triggered.

Carbide-ripened mangoes ripen from the outside in. Hay-bed ripening follows the fruit's own ethylene — it moves from the seed outward, which is why the fibre near the stone of a naturally ripened Alphonso dissolves completely, leaving a clean, hollow seed pocket. That clean pocket is a reliable home test. A carbide-ripened mango will still have chewy fibre attached to the stone.

Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284) tests our fruit weekly through the season. Certificate 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025: all 28 pesticide residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a permissible limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits — not pesticide-free.

Gir Kesar Mango from Junagadh

Kesar holds GI Tag No. 185, covering Junagadh district — the Girnar foothills and Gir forest belt in Gujarat, specifically the Talala region. All Kesar sold on AlphonsoMango.in comes from Junagadh. It does not grow in Konkan, and we do not source it from anywhere else.

Kesar pulp is a deep saffron-orange, smoother-textured than Alphonso, with a sweetness that leans more floral. The skin is thicker and more forgiving in transit. If you find Alphonso's fibre-free melt-in-the-mouth texture unfamiliar, Kesar is the easier starting point.

People Also Ask

Is mango having a sale soon?

Alphonso and Kesar mango season runs February to June each year. AlphonsoMango.in dispatches fresh fruit during that window — no cold-store blending, no off-season stock. If you are reading this outside the season, sign up for early-season alerts and you will hear first when the next harvest ships.

Pre-orders placed before dispatch can be cancelled; once fruit is picked and packed, the order moves.

What does Indian mango do to your body?

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, meeting about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 daily requirement for adult men and about 50% for women. It also supplies natural sugars, fibre and mangiferin, a polyphenol that showed anti-inflammatory activity in a 2011 cell study by Govindappa et al.

One medium Alphonso from Ratnagiri or Devgad — 180–225 g — delivers that nutrition with none of the additives that come from carbide ripening.

What's the best Indian mango?

GI-certified Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad is widely called the best mango in India — its Brix sits between 18 and 24 degrees, the skin turns deep saffron-yellow at full ripeness and the fibre dissolves completely near the seed when naturally hay-bed ripened. Gir Kesar from Junagadh runs close, with floral sweetness and a saffron-orange pulp.

Both varieties are available at AlphonsoMango.in, sourced directly from over 100 partner farmer families across 55 named Konkan villages and the Girnar belt in Gujarat.
