Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose

Both are genuine Alphonso mango. The difference is real but subtle — Devgad fruit tends to carry a slightly deeper saffron skin tone and a richer, more concentrated aroma. Ratnagiri fruit is brighter yellow-orange, marginally firmer at dispatch, and handles a 3-day transit to cities like Lucknow or Delhi without softening.

Parameter Ratnagiri Alphonso Devgad Alphonso
GI Number GI No. 139 GI No. 139
Brix (sweetness) 21–23°Brix 18 to 24°Brix
Season window Mid-April – mid-June April – June

Carbide used? No — hay-bed ripened No — hay-bed ripened

If you are ordering to Lucknow for the first time, the Ratnagiri box at ₹1,849 is a fair starting point. If you want the fruit that goes to Japan and Singapore, the Devgad export grade is the one.

Delivery Across India

We dispatch via BlueDart air cargo. Orders placed before 10 AM IST on a working day leave the same day from Ratnagiri or Devgad. Transit from the Konkan coast runs:

  • Mumbai, Pune: next day
  • Delhi, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Bangalore: 1–2 days
  • Northeast, remote pin codes: 2–3 days

We pack each box with ventilated wooden trays and padded separators. The mango arrives near-ripe — you keep it at room temperature for 12–24 hours to finish ripening, then refrigerate and consume within 3 days. We do not offer refrigerated vans. We do not ship outside the season (July to March) because there is simply no genuine Alphonso to send.

How to order

  1. Step 1: Select Grade — Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849–₹5,499) based on budget and Brix preference.
  2. Step 2: Add to Cart — Add the selected product at https://alphonsomango.in/cart.
  3. Step 3: Same-day Dispatch — Order before 10 AM IST on a working day for same-day BlueDart air dispatch.

Origin: 48 Konkan Villages

Every box we send traces back to one of 48 villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad taluka in the Konkan belt of Maharashtra. The laterite soil here — locally called jambha — drains fast after the monsoon and forces mango roots deep. That stress is what pushes sugar concentrations to 21–24°Brix. You will not replicate that Brix in a mango grown on alluvial plains, regardless of variety name.

Prashant Powle, who oversees sourcing for Powle Home Foods, personally visits orchards before each season opens. The selection criteria: trees that are at least 15 years old, no synthetic fertiliser in the previous 12 months, and fruit harvested only when the stem end curves inward — a grower's visual cue that the fruit has completed cell development on the tree. We assumed younger trees would produce acceptable fruit in lean years. The grading table in 2022 proved otherwise — younger-tree fruit fermented inside within 36 hours of dispatch, even with identical packaging.

How to identify authentic Hapus Alphonso mango from Ratnagiri and Devgad

Farming Practice in the Konkan Aamrai

Our orchard partners use cow dung, cow urine, and Panchagavya — a traditional Maharashtra formulation — alongside mulching of farm waste. No carbide. No ethylene gas chambers. The hay-bed ripening method, where harvested fruit rests on dried grass in ventilated sheds, takes 4–6 days longer than carbide ripening. We accept that delay because the aroma compounds that form during natural ripening are not recoverable once you short-circuit the process with carbide.

How to Identify Authentic Hapus

Most fruit labelled "Alphonso" in retail markets outside Konkan is not genuine. Here is what to check:

  • Skin colour: Genuine ripe Hapus is saffron-yellow to deep orange with no green patches. Carbide-ripened fruit often shows uneven yellow blotches and retains green near the base.
  • Aroma: Authentic Alphonso smells sweet and faintly floral at the stem end even before cutting. If there is no aroma, the fruit was ripened artificially or harvested too early.
  • Fibre: Zero fibre in the pulp. If you feel strands, it is not Alphonso — or it is an unripe one sold under the name.
  • Stem curve: The stem end of a tree-mature Alphonso curves inward. Flat or protruding stems indicate early harvest.
  • GI certification: Ask for the GI tag document. Ours is GI Authorisation AU/5974/GI/139/260, Registry Certificate 4163, issued 16 October 2019.
Alphonso mango in Lucknow — authentic Hapus delivered by AlphonsoMango.in

In Lucknow's local markets, what is sold as Alphonso mango between July and February is never the real thing. The genuine fruit does not exist outside April–June. If a vendor is selling "Alphonso" in October, they are selling a different variety under a premium name.

Natural Ripening, No Carbide

Calcium carbide ripening is banned under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act in India. It is also detectable — carbide-ripened fruit smells faintly chemical, and the skin softens from the outside in rather than uniformly. Natural hay-bed ripening works from the inside out: the sugars convert fully, the pulp softens evenly, and the aroma compounds — particularly furaneol and lactones — reach peak concentration.

We hold FSSAI licence 10020022011783. Every batch is checked before dispatch. If you receive fruit that shows any sign of artificial ripening, we replace the box. That has happened fewer than 12 times across 47,000+ orders since 2019.

Nutrition and Brix

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?

Devgad Alphonso typically measures 18 to 24°Brix at full ripeness. Ratnagiri Alphonso runs 21–23°Brix. For reference, a supermarket mango from a different variety usually sits at 14–16°Brix. The difference is not subtle — it is the reason one mango needs no sugar when blended into Aamras and the other does.

Key nutrients per 100 g of ripe Alphonso pulp

  • Calories: approximately 70 kcal
  • Vitamin C: 36 mg (40% of RDA)
  • Vitamin A (as beta-carotene): 54 µg RAE
  • Natural sugars: 14–16 g (higher in Alphonso than most varieties due to Brix)
  • Dietary fibre: 1.6 g

The deep saffron colour of ripe Alphonso pulp comes from beta-carotene concentration, which is measurably higher than in green-fleshed varieties. It is not a branding claim — the Indian Food Composition Tables (IFCT 2017, NIN Hyderabad) list Alphonso among the top five mango varieties by beta-carotene content.

Season and Availability

When is Alphonso mango season?

The Alphonso mango season in Ratnagiri and Devgad runs from mid-April to mid-June in a normal year. Early-season fruit (April) comes from lower-altitude orchards and tends to be slightly smaller. Peak season (May) delivers the largest, sweetest fruit. By mid-June, the monsoon arrives and flowering for the next season begins. There are no Alphonso mangoes from our farms between July and March — not because of logistics, but because the trees produce nothing worth harvesting.

Can I pre-order Alphonso mango in Lucknow?

Yes. Both product pages accept pre-orders. We dispatch in the order bookings are received once the season opens. Pre-booking also locks in the current listed price, which tends to rise by 8–12% once peak demand hits in May.

We export to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore, and Japan under APEDA registration 225579. International orders require a separate export form — use our contact page for export enquiries.
