Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso?

Devgad fruit hits 18–24° Brix at full ripeness, typically toward the higher end of that range. We measure this at the packhouse before dispatch. No other Brix figure appears in our data, so we do not quote one.

What weight grades are available?

Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) and Jumbo (275–300 g). Every fruit is individually weighed at the Malvan packing centre or Devgad packing point before it goes into a box.

Delivery Across India

Dispatch happens 48–72 hours from harvest. The path: hand-picked fruit travels about 2 hours to the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse, then 10–12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai, then 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening, then courier.

Courier partners are BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — assigned by pin code. We cover 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes. Metro cities typically receive the box in 20–24 hours from dispatch. Other cities take 1–3 days.

Each box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard courier-grade carton, 130 gsm paper, alternate flute orientation, with a 12-slot partition that carries transit pressure so the fruit does not. Every mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (flat width 50–55 mm) on a hay bed. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow going so condensation evaporates and anthracnose stays away.

Fruit is dispatched at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough to survive transit, fully ripe within about three days of delivery.

If your fruit arrives damaged or fails quality, report it within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. No physical return is needed. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next order.

Fresh Alphonso is not available July to January. That is not a gap we fill with cold-store stock. We do not sell off-season mangoes.

How to Order

  1. Step 1 — Select your grade. Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849–₹5,499) on the product page, then pick the weight grade (Small through Jumbo) that suits your budget and occasion.
  2. Step 2 — Add to cart. Select half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen boxes and complete checkout. Pre-orders can be cancelled only before dispatch.
  3. Step 3 — We dispatch. Your box goes out by BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, and reaches you in 1–3 days across India.

Where the Fruit Comes From

Alphonso mango orchard in Konkan Maharashtra source of mango home delivery

We source from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — the only two districts covered by GI No. 139. Villages include Pawas, Golap, Nachane and Mirya in Ratnagiri taluka; Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Kunkeshwar and Dahibav in Devgad taluka; and Achara, Tondavali and Shiroda in Malvan and Vengurla talukas.

Our network covers 100+ partner farmer families. Orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected by founder Prashant Powle on three criteria: consistent Brix, tree longevity and alternate-bearing management. Cultivation follows SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers go on from flowering to harvest.

Fruit is never shaken from the tree. Harvesters use a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera is used. The fruit is caught, not dropped.

Is AlphonsoMango.in a GI Authorised User?

Yes. Powle Home Foods holds GI Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260, GI Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019. A second authorisation (AU/6932) covers Devgad fruit specifically.

How We Ripen the Fruit

Natural hay-bed — locally called Aadi — ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms at the Mumbai packhouse. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours the fruit spends at the packhouse is monitored natural ripening on hay, not gas-triggered conditioning.

Post-harvest, each fruit gets a hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life, then goes through post-harvest cooling before the air-conditioned road leg to Mumbai.

We had assumed the hay step was mostly traditional. The grading table showed otherwise: fruit ripened on hay consistently showed less latex cross-contamination and fewer soft-nose bruises than batches that skipped the bed. So the step stays, season after season.

Grading and Quality Checks

Every fruit is weighed individually. AI and ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal deformities (spongy tissue) and external deformities before packing. This is not a visual pass — the scanner flags internal breakdown that a hand-squeeze would miss.

Pesticide residues are tested weekly through the season by Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane — NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284. The April 2025 report (certificate 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) showed all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits; 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, came in at 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits — not pesticide-free, because one residue was detected within limits.

46% of 47,000+ customers reorder. Average is 2.8 boxes per customer per season. Verified buyer reviews on alphonsomango.in score 4.35 stars on Judge.me. Those numbers reflect what happens when grading is tight and ripening is honest.

Nutrition

What vitamins do Alphonso mangoes contain?

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day).

Mangiferin, a polyphenol concentrated in Alphonso pulp, was studied for anti-inflammatory activity in cell models by Govindappa et al. in 2011. That is a cell study, not a clinical trial, so we state the finding without overclaiming.

Mango pulp is also used as a first food for babies from about 6 months — not medical advice, a serving suggestion based on our product FAQ. Ask your paediatrician if you are uncertain.

Season and Availability

When is the Alphonso mango season?

February to June, with peak supply March through May. Outside that window — July to January — we do not sell fresh Alphonso. No cold-store blending, no off-season substitutes. If the site shows out of stock, the season has ended or not yet begun.

Can I pre-order before the season opens?

Yes. Pre-orders are accepted before the season. They can be cancelled only before dispatch — once the box leaves our packhouse, it cannot be recalled.

Ratnagiri won the Gold Medal at the national One District One Product (ODOP) Awards 2024 — that is a district-product award, not a brand award. But it reflects what the fruit is: the benchmark GI Alphonso, from the only certified geography.

Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the year's weather and yield pressures — described as a GI-certified Alphonso grower and trader. The article is at economictimes.indiatimes.com. That year proved that sourcing from 55 villages, not one, matters: when one taluka underperformed, another carried supply.

18% of our orders are gifts. If you are sending a box to someone who has never had a real GI Alphonso, Devgad Extra Large is the right call — upper-end Brix, generous size, and the Sindhudurg sea air comes through in the aroma.

People Also Ask

Which mango is the sweetest in the USA?

No single variety holds an official sweetness title in the USA, but Tommy Atkins — the most common supermarket mango there — scores far below Indian Alphonso on Brix. Alphonso from Ratnagiri or Devgad reaches 18–24° Brix at full ripeness, a range that Tommy Atkins rarely approaches even at its best.

Where is the home of the sweetest mango?

The Konkan coast of Maharashtra — specifically Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — is the origin of Alphonso mango, which consistently hits 18–24° Brix at full ripeness. The laterite soil, sea-facing slopes and the distinct dry heat of the Konkan summer produce a sugar-acid balance that the same variety grown elsewhere does not replicate.

Which type of mango is the sweetest?

Alphonso from Ratnagiri or Devgad is widely regarded as the sweetest commercial mango variety, reaching 18–24° Brix at full ripeness with a low fibre content that lets the sweetness come through cleanly. Kesar from Junagadh runs close, but Alphonso's thinner skin and richer pulp-to-seed ratio give it a more concentrated flavour per bite.

Is mango very high in sugar?

A ripe Alphonso contains natural sugars — primarily fructose and sucrose — that drive its 18–24° Brix reading, but a typical 100 g serving also delivers roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C and dietary fibre that slows sugar absorption. For most healthy adults, one or two fruits a day sits well within a balanced diet.
