Where These Mangoes Come From

Prashant Powle sources from 48 villages spread across Ratnagiri and Devgad talukas in the Konkan coastal belt. The geography is specific: laterite-heavy red soil, a narrow monsoon shadow from the Sahyadri range, and sea air from the Arabian coast 12 km west. Change any one of those three and you get a different mango.

Villages like Pawas in Ratnagiri and Devgad town's orchard belt near Vijaydurg have been producing Alphonso under these conditions for over 200 years. The GI tag (No. 139, Registry certificate 4163, issued 16 October 2019) exists precisely because the fruit cannot be replicated elsewhere — not in Nashik, not in Konkan's northern fringe, not in Karnataka's coast.

We assumed the Brix difference between early-season and mid-season fruit would be small. The grading table proved otherwise: week-one fruit in March often reads 14–15 Brix; by the last week of April, the same tree's fruit reads 19–21. That is why we never ship week-one fruit to export customers.

What is the Brix level of Devgad Alphonso mango?

Devgad Alphonso at peak season (late April to mid-May) reads 18 to 24 Brix on a refractometer. Early-season fruit (first two weeks of March) can sit as low as 14 Brix. If a seller cannot tell you the harvest week, that is a warning sign.

Is Ratnagiri Alphonso different from Devgad Alphonso?

Both carry GI No. 139, but they come from distinct orchard clusters with different soil compositions. Devgad fruit tends toward a deeper saffron colour and slightly higher average Brix. How We Ripen — No Carbide, Ever

Natural hay-bed ripening is not a marketing phrase here; it is the method every Konkan orchard family has used for generations. Mangoes are harvested mature-green, placed in dry paddy hay, and allowed to ripen over 3–5 days at ambient temperature. The hay absorbs excess moisture and the ethylene the fruit itself releases — which is enough to trigger full ripening without any chemical intervention.

Calcium carbide ripening produces acetylene gas that forces colour change without converting starch to sugar. The result looks ripe; it is not. Our mangoes are tested under FSSAI licence 10020022011783. We do not use carbide. We also do not use ethylene injections or hot-water treatment for domestic orders.

The practical difference for fruit home delivery: a carbide-ripened mango arriving at your door may look yellow but taste starchy. A hay-ripened Alphonso arriving at 80% ripe will finish ripening on your kitchen counter in 24–36 hours and taste as it should.

Do not buy fresh "Alphonso" from any seller in August — it does not exist from Konkan.
