AlphonsoMango.in sells one type of mango: the real Alphonso. GI Authorised User AU/5974/GI/139/260, issued by the GI Registry on 16 October 2019. Every box comes from either Ratnagiri or Devgad, the two districts that hold GI Tag No. 139. Nothing else qualifies as Alphonso under Indian law.

We also stock Kesar mango, sourced from the Gir region of Junagadh (GI Tag No. 185). Both varieties are available as half dozen, one dozen, and two dozen boxes depending on season and grade.

No carbide. No ethylene chambers. Every fruit ripened on a hay bed, the way growers in Pawas, Golap and Devgad have done it for generations.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Mango?

Feature Ratnagiri Alphonso Devgad Alphonso

Both come from the Konkan coast. Both are hand-harvested, graded by weight on a machine, and scanned by AI/ML imaging for spongy tissue and external defects before packing. The difference is terroir, not process.

Delivery Across India

Fruit leaves our Malvan packing centre or Devgad packing point 48 to 72 hours after harvest. The route: about 2 hours from tree to packhouse, post-harvest hot-water treatment and cooling, then 10 to 12 hours by air-conditioned vehicle to our Mumbai packhouse. There, each mango rests on hay for 24 to 48 hours — natural ripening, monitored, not gas-triggered. Then dispatch.

Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Metro cities receive fruit in 20 to 24 hours. Most other Indian cities get it within 1 to 3 days. We service 15,000 to 17,000 pin codes across India.

Fruit is dispatched at 70 to 80% ripeness — firm enough for transit, fully ripe within about three days of delivery. If fruit arrives damaged in transit or fails on quality, report it within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next purchase. No physical return needed.

We do not ship fresh Alphonso from July to January. The season ends. That is the honest limit of what we sell.

Where These Mangoes Come From

Hapus mangoes from Konkan India — Ratnagiri and Devgad orchards

Our fruit comes from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. In Ratnagiri taluka: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Shirgaon, Mirya, Kalbadevi, Majgaon, Kasheli, Adi. In Devgad taluka: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Hindale, Naringre, Kanyabag, Padel, Girye and more. Every village is on the Konkan coast, where sea-facing orchards, laterite soil and the precise humidity off the Arabian Sea produce the flavour GI No. 139 is supposed to guarantee.

Prashant Powle built this network starting in 2017. He selects orchards on three criteria: Brix consistency across the harvest, tree age (our partner trees are typically 12 to 25 years old), and how the farmer manages alternate-bearing years. We work with 100+ partner farmer families. They follow cultivation SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are used from flowering through to harvest.

Harvest is by hand. A Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and a cutting mechanism takes each fruit cleanly from the branch. The tree is never shaken. Fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera is used so the harvester can see the stem before cutting.

What the GI Tag Actually Means for Mangoes in India

GI Tag No. 139 covers Alphonso mangoes grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. It does not cover every mango sold as "Hapus" in a Mumbai market. The GI Registry issued our certificate (No. 4163) on 16 October 2019. Our Authorised User number is AU/5974/GI/139/260 for Ratnagiri and AU/6932 for Devgad. When you see those numbers, the fruit is traceable to a registered source. When you do not see them, ask why.

Ratnagiri Alphonso also won the Gold Medal at the national ODOP (One District One Product) Awards 2024 — a district-product recognition, not an award to any single seller.

How They Are Ripened

Natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24 to 48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay, monitored, not gas-triggered.

Calcium carbide is banned under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations. It also leaves bitter aftertaste and uneven ripening — the outside looks ready while the seed area is still raw. Hay-ripened Alphonso from Golap or Pawas reaches full sugar development uniformly, which is why the Brix reads 18 to 24 at the moment you cut it open, not 12 at the seed and 20 at the cheek.

We test residues weekly through the season. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284), tested our fruit on 5 April 2025 (report 01/ETHAP2500044). All 28 residues were within Codex maximum residue limits. Twenty-seven of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, read 0.013 mg/kg against a permitted limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits" — we do not say "pesticide-free," because one residue was detected, within limits.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with peak supply in March and April. By late June, most orchards are done. We sell no fresh Alphonso from July through January. If you see "Alphonso" listed somewhere in October, it is either processed pulp or not Alphonso.

Pre-orders open before the season. A pre-order can be cancelled before dispatch — not after. Once the box is on the courier network, it is yours.

Kesar mango from the Gir region (GI Tag No. 185) overlaps slightly with the Alphonso season and is available on the site while stock lasts.

When is the best time to buy mangoes in India?

March to May for peak Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad. Early-season fruit (February) is smaller and the Brix can be at the lower end of the 18–24 range. Late-season fruit (June) is generous in size but supply is thinner and weather unpredictable. Prashant Powle spoke to The Economic Times in June 2026 on exactly this — weather volatility and its impact on late-season yield (read the article).

Nutrition

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30 to 36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40 to 45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day).

Mangiferin, a polyphenol found in mango, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). That is a cell study, not a clinical trial — useful context, not a health claim.

Alphonso puree is suitable as a first fruit for babies from about 6 months. Keep that as a serving suggestion and confirm with your paediatrician.

People Also Ask

Which is the best Indian mango?

Most growers, chefs and fruit traders name the Alphonso — Hapus — as India's finest mango. Grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts on the Konkan coast, it reaches 18 to 24° Brix at full ripeness, with a deep, non-fibrous pulp and a flavour no other variety from any other region replicates.

Within Alphonso, Devgad fruit typically sits at the upper end of that Brix range, while Ratnagiri carries a brighter, citrus-edged sweetness — two expressions of the same GI tag, terroir doing the work.

Is India known for mangoes?

India produces roughly half the world's mangoes and has done so for over 4,000 years. The subcontinent holds more named varieties than any other country — over 1,000 documented cultivars — and gave the world the Alphonso, the Dasheri, the Langra and the Kesar, each tied to a specific geography and season.

The Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg earned India's GI Tag No. 139, a formal recognition that its flavour is inseparable from that particular coastal soil and climate.

Can I buy Indian mangoes in the USA?

Fresh Indian Alphonso mangoes have been cleared for import into the USA since 2007, subject to irradiation treatment required by USDA APHIS. Several Indian exporters ship during the February-to-June season. AlphonsoMango.in exports to the US market; check the site during season for current availability and grade options.

For buyers inside India, delivery reaches 15,000 to 17,000 pin codes in 1 to 3 days — no irradiation required, fruit dispatched at 70 to 80% ripeness and fully ripe within three days of delivery.

Which country is no. 1 in mango?

India is the world's largest mango producer by volume, accounting for roughly 40 to 50 percent of global output most years, according to FAO data. China is the second-largest producer. India's dominance comes from scale, variety depth and a domestic consumption base that absorbs most of the crop before export even begins.

Despite that volume lead, India's mango export share is relatively small — most of what leaves the country is premium fruit like GI-tagged Alphonso, destined for markets in the US, UK, UAE, Japan and Singapore.
