Alphonso mango in Sangli is not grown locally — genuine GI-tagged Hapus (GI No. 139) comes from Ratnagiri and Devgad in the Konkan. Powle Home Foods delivers carbide-free fruit to Sangli in 1–3 days, March to June.
Buy Alphonso Mango in Sangli
Sangli is known for turmeric and sugar, not mangoes. The Alphonso you see in Sangli's markets has travelled from the Konkan coast — and the journey matters enormously to quality. When it passes through middlemen, it arrives calcium-carbide ripened, already past its best. The only way to get the real thing in Sangli is to order directly from the source.
Devgad Alphonso Mango
Hand-harvested from Devgad taluka orchards. Brix 18–24°, weight 150–275 g by grade. Available March to June.

Both carry GI No. 139 under Powle Home Foods' Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260. The difference is in character, not quality. Our order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri; customers closer to the coast often prefer Devgad.

Delivery Across India
Every box leaves the Mumbai packhouse at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough for the journey, ripening fully within about three days of delivery. We use BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Sangli and most western Maharashtra cities receive fruit within one to two days. Remote pin codes may take three days. We serve 15,000–17,000 pin codes across India.
Packaging is a 5-ply corrugated CFB box (130 gsm paper, alternate flute orientation) in 3.5 kg or 4 kg sizes. Each fruit sits in a foam-net sleeve on a hay bed. The 12-slot partition carries the transit pressure — the fruit does not. Six air holes top and bottom keep airflow moving so condensation evaporates rather than triggering mould.
If fruit arrives damaged in transit, photograph or video it and send the evidence on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account. No physical return is needed.
Where Real Alphonso Comes From
Sangli sits on the Deccan plateau, about 350 km from the Konkan coast. The laterite soil, coastal humidity and sea-facing exposure that define the Konkan are absent here. Attempts to grow Alphonso inland consistently produce fruit with lower Brix, thinner flesh and a different flavour profile. The GI tag exists precisely because geography is not replicable.
We source from 55 named villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. In Ratnagiri taluka: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mavalange, Waravade, Purnagad, Gaonkhadi, Ambeshet, Mirya, Kalbadevi and others. In Devgad taluka: Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Girye, Rameshwar, Waghotan, Kunkeshwar and more. Over 100 partner farmer families tend orchards typically 12 to 25 years old, selected by Prashant Powle on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management.
Why the soil in Sangli cannot replicate Konkan Alphonso
Konkan orchards grow on laterite — iron-rich, slightly acidic, free-draining. The sea wind brings daily humidity cycles the fruit uses during both flowering and ripening. Sangli's black cotton soil (regur) holds water, suits sugarcane and turmeric, but yields a different mango biology. The 18–24° Brix that Konkan Alphonso reaches at full ripeness is a product of that specific combination of soil mineral profile, coastal humidity and orchard age. No amount of irrigation or fertiliser replicates it elsewhere.
What GI No. 139 means for buyers in Sangli
GI No. 139 is a geographical indication covering Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Any mango labelled "Alphonso" grown outside that boundary cannot legally carry the GI tag. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User certificate AU/5974/GI/139/260, issued 16 October 2019 (Registry Certificate No. 4163). When you order from us, you are buying from a GI-certified source — something no Sangli local market vendor can guarantee.
How We Ripen the Fruit
Every fruit goes through natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening in temperature-controlled rooms at our Mumbai packhouse. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24 to 48 hours the fruit spends on hay at the Mumbai packhouse is monitored ripening, not gas-triggered acceleration.
Before that, the supply chain runs like this: fruit is hand-harvested using a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net — the tree is never shaken and fruit never falls. It reaches the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse within two hours of harvest. Post-harvest cooling follows, then 10 to 12 hours by air-conditioned transport to Mumbai. Total time from harvest to dispatch: 48 to 72 hours.
Every mango is weighed, graded (Small 150–180 g, Medium 180–225 g, Extra Large 250–275 g, Jumbo 275–300 g) and scanned by AI/ML-assisted machine vision for spongy tissue and external deformities before packing. The grading table proved something we hadn't anticipated when we started: spongy tissue is not always visible from outside, which is why the internal scan matters.
Carbide and pesticide-residue testing runs weekly through the season at Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane (NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). Report 01/ETHAP2500044 issued 5 April 2025 shows all 28 residues within Codex maximum residue limits — 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits." We do not say "pesticide-free" — one residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg.
Season and Availability
Fresh Alphonso is available February to June, with peak harvest March to May. We do not sell fresh Alphonso July to January — anyone offering it outside this window is selling a different variety or cold-stored fruit. That is the honest limit of the season and we do not try to work around it.
Kesar mango from Junagadh and Gir (GI No. 185) overlaps the tail of the Alphonso season and can extend your mango calendar slightly. Aamras and mango pulp are available year-round if you want Alphonso flavour outside peak season.
The 2026 season saw difficult weather across Konkan — Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the yield pressure facing GI-certified growers (read the article). Tight supply years make traceability more important, not less.

People Also Ask

Alphonso mango price varies by grade, variety and season. Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso from GI-certified sources typically sells in the range of ₹400–₹900 per kg, depending on fruit size and the week within the March–June season. Prices are highest at peak season and drop as supply rises in May.

Is Alphonso mango available in the USA?
Yes, Alphonso mango is available in the USA, primarily as pulp or frozen puree, since fresh Alphonso exports face USDA phytosanitary requirements including irradiation treatment. AlphonsoMango.in currently ships fresh Alphonso within India — the export footprint covers the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan mainly through processed mango formats.
If you have family in India, ordering fresh Alphonso for delivery to any of our 15,000–17,000 serviceable Indian pin codes is straightforward during the March–June season.
Which is the best variety of Alphonso mango?
Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso are both the best — both carry GI No. 139 and reach 18–24° Brix at full ripeness. The difference is character: Ratnagiri is bright and citrus-forward; Devgad runs deeper, more honeyed, with fibre-free pulp. Our data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri, coastal buyers often prefer Devgad.
If you are ordering in Sangli for the first time, a Devgad dozen is a reliable starting point for the full Konkan flavour.
Why is Alphonso mango costly?
Alphonso from Ratnagiri and Devgad costs more because geography, labour and short supply all compound. The GI-tagged zone covers two coastal districts; orchards are typically 12–25 years old; fruit is hand-harvested one mango at a time using a pole with a catching net so it never falls or bruises. Each fruit is then weighed, graded and AI-scanned before packing.
The season runs only March to June — about 90 days — and a single poor flowering flush, as happened in 2026, cuts supply sharply and pushes prices further up.
