We source from 55 villages across Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. Prashant Powle selects each orchard on Brix consistency and tree age — most orchards are 12–25 years old, sea-facing, in the laterite belt that gives Alphonso its sharp acidity-sweetness balance. Two varieties are available this season.

Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose

Both varieties carry GI No. 139 and come from the Konkan coast. The differences are real, not marketing. Devgad fruit — from villages like Jamsande, Vijaydurg and Kunkeshwar in Sindhudurg — tends to sit at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range and carries a slightly smaller seed relative to pulp volume. Ratnagiri fruit from villages like Pawas, Golap and Nachane delivers the same sharp floral aroma but fruit weights spread more widely across grades. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri; Mumbai leans Devgad.

Delivery Across India

Every box leaves the Mumbai packhouse within 48–72 hours of harvest. The chain runs like this: fruit reaches our Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse within about two hours of picking. After post-harvest cooling and a hot-water surface treatment, it travels 10–12 hours in an air-conditioned vehicle to Mumbai. There it rests 24–48 hours on hay beds in temperature-controlled rooms — natural ripening, no ethylene gas, no calcium carbide. Then it dispatches.

Courier is BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, across 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes. Metro cities receive fruit in 20–24 hours. Most other cities get delivery within 1–3 days. Fruit ships at 70–80% ripeness — firm enough for transit, fully ripe within about three days of delivery.

The box itself is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard carton, 130 gsm, with alternate flute orientation, reinforced corners, a 12-slot partition that carries transit pressure (not the fruit), six air holes for airflow, and every mango seated in a foam-net sleeve that prevents lenticel bruising. Alphonso lenticels blacken when rubbed; that foam net is not decorative.

One honest limitation: we do not sell fresh Alphonso July through January. The season ends. If you place an order outside February–June, you will find nothing in stock — and we will not pretend otherwise.

How to Order

  1. Select your grade. Choose Devgad Alphonso (₹1,849–₹5,499) or Kesar Mango (₹999–₹1,699) on the product page. Grades run from Small (150–180 g per fruit) through Jumbo (275–300 g). Jumbo boxes suit corporate gifting; Medium suits everyday eating.
  2. Add to cart. Box options are half dozen, one dozen, and two dozen. Pick the quantity that matches your household size or gifting list — two-dozen boxes work out better per fruit for bulk buyers.
  3. Dispatch. Once your order confirms, we dispatch via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code. Most Indian cities receive delivery in 1–3 days. You get a tracking number by SMS and email.

Where Alphonso Actually Comes From

Authentic Alphonso is a product of a specific geography. GI No. 139 covers Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts in coastal Maharashtra. We source from 55 named villages — Pawas, Golap, Nachane and Mirya in Ratnagiri taluka; Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg and Kunkeshwar in Devgad taluka; Achara, Tondavali and Shiroda in Malvan and Vengurla. The sea-facing laterite slopes, the specific monsoon pattern and the soil chemistry together produce sugar-acid ratios that growers elsewhere cannot replicate regardless of variety name.

We work with 100+ partner farmer families. Most orchards are 12–25 years old. Older trees — managed on alternate-bearing cycles — consistently deliver tighter Brix variation within a box than younger orchards on the same soil. Prashant Powle visits orchards before each season and selects on those two criteria: Brix consistency and alternate-bearing discipline.

Harvesting is careful work. A Nutan/Zela pole with a cutting mechanism and catching net removes each fruit without shaking the tree. Fruit never falls to the ground. For tall trees we use an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera attached — we see the fruit before cutting. This matters because a dropped Alphonso bruises internally without showing it on the skin, and internal damage accelerates spongy tissue.

How to Spot Authentic Alphonso

The counterfeiting problem in Alphonso shopping is real. Sellers dye other mango varieties with fragrant yellow colouring and sell them at Hapus prices. Prashant Powle discussed this — along with the 2026 weather-driven yield crisis — in an Economic Times interview published June 2026.

Four things separate genuine GI Alphonso from imitations:

Skin colour: Real Alphonso is yellow to golden-yellow with a faint orange blush on the shoulder, uniform across the fruit. Dyed fruit often shows uneven colour pooling near the base or a slightly synthetic brightness.

Smell: Authentic Alphonso carries a sharp, floral fragrance detectable at arm's length when ripe. No dye replicates this. If a mango smells faintly of acetylene or has no odour, reject it.

Pulp texture: No fibre, no strings. The flesh dissolves. You can eat it with a spoon straight from the halved fruit. Stringiness means a different variety.

Certification: Buy from a GI Authorised User. Our GI Authorised User number is AU/5974/GI/139/260. That certificate (Registry No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019) is verifiable through the GI Registry. We also hold FSSAI 10020022011783 and APEDA 225579.

We test every week through the season. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd., Thane — NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284 — issued report 01/ETHAP2500044 on 5 April 2025. All 28 pesticide residues were within Codex maximum residue limits. 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, registered 0.013 mg/kg against a permissible limit of 0.2 mg/kg. Independently tested, all residues within Codex limits — that is the accurate claim.

Ripening: What Happens Before Your Box Arrives

Natural hay-bed ripening — called Aadi ripening — is the only method we use. In temperature-controlled rooms at the Mumbai packhouse, each batch rests on hay for 24–48 hours. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind. This is monitored ripening, not triggered ripening.

Before the hay bed, every fruit passes through AI/ML-assisted machine scanning for internal defects including spongy tissue — the condition that looks fine externally but ruins the eating experience — and external deformities. Then it is weighed and assigned to a grade. The process is not a sorting line; it is a quality gate. Fruit that fails does not ship.

We also apply a controlled hot-water treatment after harvest to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life. Combined with post-harvest cooling before transport, this is why our fruit arrives in better condition than local-market Alphonso that was harvested a day earlier.

Storage and Shelf Life

Your box arrives at 70–80% ripeness. Leave fruit at room temperature — do not refrigerate unripe Alphonso. It will be eating-ready within about three days of delivery. Once fully ripe (the skin gives very slightly under thumb pressure, the fragrance is sharp), you can refrigerate for two to three more days. Refrigerating too early kills the aroma development and flattens the Brix perception on the palate.

Do not stack fruit in a bowl. The 12-slot partition in the shipping box is the safest place for fruit still ripening. Lenticels bruise from contact, and bruised Alphonso darkens fast.

Nutrition Worth Knowing

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving covers about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, a polyphenol present in Alphonso, showed anti-inflammatory activity in cell studies (Govindappa et al., 2011). That is a cell study — we are not claiming clinical outcomes.

Alphonso pulp also works well as a first fruit for babies from about six months — as a serving suggestion, not medical advice. Our Aamras and mango pulp products use the same GI-certified fruit, processed at our own facility.

People Also Ask

Why is Alphonso so expensive?

Alphonso costs more because of geography, not branding. GI No. 139 restricts authentic fruit to Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts, where laterite soil and sea-facing slopes produce the 18–24° Brix range no other region can match. Add careful hand harvesting, 48–72-hour cold-chain dispatch, and a short season of February to June, and the price reflects real constraints.

Fruits that fall to the ground are rejected — every piece is cut by hand using a Nutan/Zela pole with a catching net, which alone rules out the bruising that would drop a fruit to commodity pricing.

Is Alphonso mango available in the USA?

Yes. AlphonsoMango.in holds APEDA registration 225579 and exports Alphonso to the US, UK, UAE, Singapore and Japan. Within India the same supply chain — air-conditioned transport, natural hay-bed ripening, 5-ply corrugated packaging — handles 15,000–17,000 pin codes with delivery in 1–3 days for most cities.

Fresh Alphonso is only available February to June; outside that window, no stock exists anywhere because the season simply ends.

Why is Alphonso so famous?

Alphonso is famous because the flavour is genuinely hard to replicate. The laterite slopes and monsoon pattern of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts produce a sugar-acid balance — Brix 18 to 24° at full ripeness — that growers elsewhere cannot copy even using the same variety name. GI No. 139 exists precisely because geography drives that difference, not just cultivation skill.

Devgad fruit from villages like Jamsande and Vijaydurg typically sits at the upper end of that Brix range, which is why it commands premium prices in Mumbai's wholesale markets every March.

What does the name Alphonso mean?

Alphonso is a Portuguese personal name, derived from the Old High German Adalfuns, meaning noble and ready. The mango variety takes its name from Afonso de Albuquerque, the Portuguese viceroy who governed Goa in the early 1500s and is credited with introducing and propagating grafted mango varieties along the Konkan coast during that period.

Despite the Portuguese origin of its name, the variety's character today is entirely Konkani — shaped by the laterite soils, sea winds and specific rainfall pattern of coastal Maharashtra.
