Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which Should You Order?
Both carry GI No. 139. The difference is in soil, microclimate and, honestly, personal taste. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows north India leans Ratnagiri; Mumbai leans Devgad. PCMC buyers tend to split roughly even — so the table below should help you decide.
| Feature | Ratnagiri Alphonso | Devgad Alphonso |
|---|---|---|

One honest note: we do not sell fresh Alphonso from July to January. The tree simply does not produce then. Any site selling "Alphonso" outside February–June is selling a different variety or cold-stored fruit — neither is what you want.
Delivery to PCMC and Pune
Fruit is harvested by hand in villages like Pawas, Golap and Nachane in Ratnagiri or Devgad and Jamsande in Sindhudurg. It reaches our Mumbai packhouse by air-conditioned vehicle within 10–12 hours. After 24–48 hours of monitored hay-bed ripening it goes to BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — whichever covers your PCMC pin code. PCMC sits roughly 150 km from Mumbai. Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes.
Packaging: a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box (130 gsm, alternate flute orientation) with a 12-slot partition, six air holes, and every mango in a foam-net sleeve to prevent lenticel bruising and stem punctures. The partition carries transit pressure so the fruit does not.
If anything arrives damaged, photograph or video the fruit and box, send it on WhatsApp within 24 hours of delivery. No physical return. We dispatch a fresh replacement or credit your account for the next order.

Where the Mangoes Come From
Powle Home Foods sources from 48 villages — 14 in Ratnagiri taluka, 13 more across Rajapur, Lanja and Mandangad talukas, and 24 in Devgad taluka plus 5 in Malvan and Vengurla. Prashant Powle, who founded AlphonsoMango.in in 2017, personally selected orchards based on three things: Brix consistency above 18°, tree age (typically 12–25 years old), and the farmer's alternate-bearing management practice. Sea-facing orchards in Devgad and the laterite-soil orchards around Golap in Ratnagiri are the ones that consistently hit the upper Brix range.
Every fruit is weighed, graded, and scanned by an AI/ML-assisted machine that checks for internal spongy tissue and external deformities before it goes into the box. Fruit that does not clear the scan does not ship. We assumed weight grading alone would catch most rejections — the machine proved otherwise, flagging internal issues in fruit that looked fine by eye.
Prashant was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on the weather pressure Alphonso growers face, and spoke plainly about how yield variability in years like 2025–26 affects pricing and availability. That kind of season-to-season honesty is what 47,000+ repeat customers — 46% of whom reorder — have come to expect.
How is the fruit harvested?
By hand, using a Nutan or Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. The tree is never shaken; the fruit never falls. For tall trees, an indigenously developed length-extending pole with a camera is used. No dropping means no internal bruising before the mango even reaches the packhouse.
How They Are Ripened
Natural hay-bed — called Aadi — ripening only, in temperature-controlled rooms. No ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural ripening on hay, monitored, not gas-triggered. Fruit dispatches at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough for transit, and ripens fully within about three days of delivery.
Post-harvest, every batch goes through a controlled hot-water treatment to reduce surface issues and extend shelf life, followed by cooling at the packhouse before the air-conditioned truck leaves for Mumbai.
Is carbide use tested?
Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL-accredited) tests weekly through the season. Their April 2025 report (01/ETHAP2500044) checked 28 pesticide residues — all within Codex MRLs, 27 of 28 below the limit of quantification. We say "independently tested, all residues within Codex limits." We do not say "pesticide-free" — one residue, thiamethoxam at 0.013 mg/kg, was detected within its 0.2 mg/kg limit.
Storage After Delivery
When the box arrives, the mangoes are at 70–80% ripeness. Leave them at room temperature — not in the refrigerator — for two to three days. Once fully soft and fragrant, refrigerate and eat within a day. Chilling an unripe Alphonso kills the aroma compounds; you will get a bland, cold fruit instead of the 24° Brix experience you paid for. This is the single most common mistake buyers make.
Nutrition at a Glance
Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving covers about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily allowance for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, the dominant polyphenol in Alphonso pulp, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study by Govindappa et al. (2011). That is a cell study — not a clinical trial — so we report it as a finding, not a health claim.

Order in half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen boxes at alphonsomango.in — season runs February to June only.
How much does 1 kg of mango cost?
Alphonso mango pricing varies by grade, variety and season, so a flat per-kg figure is misleading. Fruit is sold by box — half dozen, 1 dozen or 2 dozen — in weight grades from Small (150–180 g) to Jumbo (275–300 g). Devgad fruit typically costs a little more than Ratnagiri because yield is lower and typical Brix is higher.
Check current season prices on the product pages, since Alphonso pricing shifts week to week as harvest volumes change.
What is the best month to buy mangoes?
For Alphonso mangoes delivered to PCMC, April and May are the peak months — supply is highest, fruit hits the upper end of its 18–24° Brix range, and both Ratnagiri and Devgad varieties are available in all four weight grades. The season opens in February and closes by June; no genuine fresh Alphonso ships after that.
If you want the deepest flavour, order Devgad Alphonso in late April to mid-May, when typical Brix is at its highest for the year.
Can mangoes be couriered?
Yes — Alphonso mangoes courier well when packed correctly. Each fruit goes into a foam-net sleeve inside a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard box with a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the fruit does not. Fruit dispatches at 70–80% ripeness, firm enough to handle 1–2 days in transit, and ripens fully within about three days of delivery.
If anything arrives damaged, send photos or video on WhatsApp within 24 hours — no physical return is needed and a fresh replacement or account credit follows.
