Ratnagiri vs Devgad: Which to Choose?

Both carry GI No. 139. The fruit from Devgad villages — Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Girye, Kunkeshwar — typically sits at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range we measure at harvest. Ratnagiri fruit, sourced from orchards in Pawas, Golap, Nachane and Mirya, has a slightly thinner skin and a flavour profile north Indian customers describe as more floral. Our repeat-order data from 47,000+ customers shows exactly this split: north India leans Ratnagiri, Mumbai leans Devgad.

Delivery Across India

From harvest to your door takes 48–72 hours in total. The fruit travels roughly 2 hours from the orchard to our Ratnagiri or Devgad packing point, then 10–12 hours by air-conditioned transport to the Mumbai packhouse, then 24–48 hours of natural hay-bed ripening, then dispatch.

We ship to 15,000–17,000 serviceable pin codes via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — the courier depends on your pin code. Transit is 20–24 hours to metro cities and 1–3 days elsewhere in India. We do not sell fresh Alphonso from July to January — the season closes, and we will not ship fruit that isn't at its peak.

Every box is a top-and-bottom 5-ply corrugated fibreboard (130 gsm, alternate flute orientation) with a 12-slot partition that absorbs transit pressure so the fruit doesn't. Each mango sits in a foam-net sleeve (50–55 mm flat width) on a hay bed. Six air holes in the box keep condensation from triggering anthracnose — a practical detail we learned the hard way before standardising the current pack format.

How to Order

  1. Step 1 — Select your grade. Choose Ratnagiri Alphonso (₹1,849–₹5,399) or Devgad Alphonso (₹1,849–₹5,499), then pick your weight grade: Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g), or Jumbo (275–300 g). Box sizes are half dozen, one dozen, or two dozen.
  2. Step 2 — Add to cart. Confirm your delivery pin code at checkout. The system shows you live availability for your area.
  3. Step 3 — Dispatch. Your order ships via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code, reaching most Indian cities in 1–3 days.

If fruit arrives transit-damaged or quality-fails on delivery, photograph or video the fruit and packaging and send it to us on WhatsApp within 24 hours. We replace with a fresh dispatch or credit your account for the next purchase. No physical return required.

Where Our Mangoes Come From

Prashant Powle built the sourcing network starting in 2017 across 55 named villages in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts — the site copy says 48+, the full verified count is 55. On the Devgad side that includes Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Kunkeshwar, Dahibav and Girye. On the Ratnagiri side: Pawas, Golap, Nachane, Mirya and Kasheli, among others.

Partner orchards are typically 12–25 years old, sea-facing, selected on Brix consistency and alternate-bearing management. We work with 100+ farmer families. Cultivation follows strict SOPs covering which natural sprays and fertilisers are used from flowering to harvest — not a marketing phrase, an actual written protocol each partner signs up to.

What does "GI Tagged" actually mean for Alphonso mangoes?

GI No. 139 covers Alphonso grown in Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts only. It is a geographical certification: the name "Alphonso" on a GI-tagged box legally certifies origin. Powle Home Foods holds Authorised User status AU/5974/GI/139/260 (Registry Certificate No. 4163, issued 16 October 2019) and AU/6932 for Devgad. A seller without an AU number cannot legally GI-tag their boxes.

How We Ripen the Fruit

Every mango we ship is ripened on hay — the traditional Aadi method — in temperature-controlled rooms at our Mumbai packhouse. The 24–48 hours there is monitored, not gas-triggered. No ethylene chambers. No calcium carbide. No artificial ripening agents of any kind.

We also run weekly carbide and pesticide-residue testing through Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. (Thane, NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284). The April 2025 panel (certificate 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) tested 28 residues: 27 of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg); thiamethoxam came in at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg. We say "all residues within Codex limits" — we do not say "pesticide-free," because one residue was detected, within limits.

How is each fruit graded before packing?

Every fruit is weighed and sorted into Small, Medium, Extra Large or Jumbo bands. After weighing, AI/ML-assisted machine scanning checks each mango for internal defects (spongy tissue is the main one) and external deformities. Fruit that fails either check does not go into a customer box. We assumed visual sorting alone was sufficient in our first seasons — the grading table proved otherwise, which is why we invested in scanning.

How to Verify Authenticity

Ask any seller for their GI Authorised User number. Ours is AU/5974/GI/139/260 (Ratnagiri) and AU/6932 (Devgad). Ask for their FSSAI licence number — ours is 10020022011783. Our APEDA export registration is 225579. These three numbers are publicly verifiable. If a seller cannot produce all three, the GI claim is unverified.

Prashant Powle was interviewed by The Economic Times in June 2026 on weather impact and yield pressure — cited as a GI-certified Alphonso grower and trader. Ratnagiri Alphonso also won the Gold Medal at the ODOP (One District One Product) Awards 2024 — a district-product award, not specific to our brand, but relevant to the origin story.

Nutrition You Can Measure

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving covers about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). Mangiferin, the polyphenol concentrated in Alphonso skin and seed kernel, showed anti-inflammatory activity in a cell study by Govindappa et al. (2011) — a cell study, not a clinical trial, so we keep the claim at that level.

Alphonso pulp is also suitable as a first fruit for babies from about 6 months — this is a serving suggestion, not medical advice.

Season and Availability

The Alphonso season runs February to June, with the peak between March and May. Outside that window — July through January — we do not sell fresh Alphonso. There is no workaround: the fruit does not exist at quality outside those months, and we will not sell something that isn't at its best. If you are reading this outside the season, you can place a pre-order; pre-orders can be cancelled only before dispatch.

18% of our orders are gifts. If you are buying for someone else, order by early May at the latest for peak-season fruit.

People Also Ask

What organ is mango good for?

Mango benefits the liver, skin, eyes and gut most directly. The pulp supplies vitamin C — about 30–36 mg per 100 g, meeting roughly 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 RDA for adult men — along with beta-carotene for eye health and dietary fibre that supports digestive regularity.

Alphonso pulp is particularly rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A — a nutrient the liver stores and the eyes depend on daily.

Which is the tastiest mango in the world?

Alphonso — called Hapus in Maharashtra — is widely regarded as the tastiest mango in the world, and the Ratnagiri and Devgad varieties hold India's GI Tag No. 139 confirming their origin. At 18–24° Brix, fiberless pulp and a saffron-yellow colour, no other variety matches it on sweetness, aroma and texture together.

Devgad Alphonso typically sits at the upper end of that Brix range, while Ratnagiri fruit is described by north Indian buyers as more floral — two distinct expressions of the same GI-protected fruit.

What does Alphonso mango taste like?

Alphonso tastes intensely sweet with a rich, saffron-like aroma, fiberless melt-in-the-mouth pulp and a clean finish that carries no turpentine edge. Brix sits between 18 and 24° at full ripeness. Ratnagiri Alphonso reads as more floral; Devgad fruit is denser and slightly richer — a difference 47,000+ customers across India describe consistently in their reorders.
