Kochi sits at the southern end of India's spice-trade coast — it has been importing prized goods since the 14th century. The one thing that was always missing from that trade route was a direct, verified source for GI-tagged Alphonso mangoes. That gap is now closed.

Kochi customers ordering for the first time tend to pick Devgad — the slightly higher Brix and the firmer texture at dispatch both suit the transit south. Either variety arrives at 70–80% ripeness and reaches full ripeness within about three days of delivery.

Delivery to Kochi

Alphonso mango online delivery in Kochi Kerala

Harvest to dispatch runs 48–72 hours: the fruit moves from the Ratnagiri or Devgad packhouse to the Mumbai packhouse by air-conditioned vehicle (10–12 hours), rests on hay for 24–48 hours of natural ripening, then leaves with BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees — whichever courier covers your Kochi pin code best.

Orders placed before 12 noon IST (Monday to Saturday) are dispatched the same day. Delivery takes 1 to 3 days for most PIN codes and 1 to 2 days to most metros, depending on your PIN code. Fresh mangoes are delivered by Blue Dart to more than 4,700 PIN codes. The box is a 5-ply corrugated fibreboard courier-grade unit with a 12-slot partition, six airflow holes and a foam-net sleeve around every fruit. The partition carries the transit pressure so the mangoes don't.

If any fruit arrives transit-damaged, report it within 24 hours of delivery with photos or video on WhatsApp. A fresh replacement is dispatched or the value is credited to your account. No physical return is needed.

We do not ship fresh Alphonso mangoes July to January. There are no mangoes from Ratnagiri or Devgad in the off-season — any seller claiming otherwise is selling stored or different fruit. The 2027 mango season starts on 1 February 2027, and fresh mangoes are out of stock until then.

How to Order

  1. Select your grade. Choose Ratnagiri (₹1,849 to ₹5,399) or Devgad (₹1,849 to ₹5,499) and pick Small (150–180 g), Medium (180–225 g), Extra Large (250–275 g) or Jumbo (275–300 g) depending on how many people you are serving and your gift intent.
  2. Add to cart. Box options are half dozen, one dozen or two dozen. Two dozen suits a household or a small corporate gift run; half dozen is right for a first order or a tasting.
  3. Place your order and we dispatch. Shipping goes via BlueDart, Delhivery, Ekart or XpressBees depending on your pin code.

Where the Mangoes Come From

Powle Home Foods sources from 48 coastal villages across Ratnagiri and Devgad. On the Sindhudurg side, that includes Devgad, Jamsande, Vijaydurg, Dahibav, Kunkeshwar and Waghotan among others — sea-facing orchards where the salt breeze and laterite soil push the Brix higher than inland plots. On the Ratnagiri side, Pawas, Golap, Nachane and Mavalange supply the bulk of the Ratnagiri fruit.

Founder Prashant Powle works directly with 100-plus partner farmer families. The orchards are typically 12–25 years old, selected on Brix consistency and how the trees handle alternate-bearing years. Cultivation follows SOPs on natural sprays and fertilisers from flowering through to harvest. No chemical shortcuts at any stage.

Fruit never falls from the tree. Harvesters use a Nutan/Zela pole fitted with a catching net and cutting mechanism. For tall trees, an indigenously developed camera-fitted extension pole lets the harvester see exactly what they are cutting. A dropped Alphonso bruises internally — the lenticels blacken under friction, and that damage only shows up two days later at your kitchen table.

After harvest, every fruit goes through weight grading and AI/ML-assisted machine scanning for internal defects including spongy tissue, and external deformities. The ones that pass go into the foam-net sleeves. The ones that don't are removed before packing, not after delivery.

Ripening and Quality

What is natural hay-bed ripening?

The 24–48 hours at the Mumbai packhouse is natural hay-bed (Aadi) ripening in temperature-controlled rooms — no ethylene chambers, no calcium carbide, no artificial ripening agents of any kind. The fruit ripens on hay, monitored by staff, exactly as it would in a traditional Konkan home. This is not a marketing claim. It is the practice that the 47,000-plus customers since 2020 have come to rely on — 46% of them reorder.

Carbide-ripened mangoes ripen from the outside in, leaving the seed area firm and the skin over-soft. Hay-ripened fruit moves evenly from pulp outward. You can taste the difference, and you can also see it when you cut the mango — uniform deep saffron colour all the way to the stone, no white or green patches near the seed.

Is the fruit tested for residues?

Yes. Envirocare Labs Pvt. Ltd. in Thane — NABL accredited, certificate TC-8284 — tests our fruit weekly through the season. The April 2025 panel (certificate 01/ETHAP2500044, issued 5 April 2025) checked 28 pesticide residues. All 28 were within Codex maximum residue limits. Twenty-seven of 28 were below the limit of quantification (0.01 mg/kg). One residue, thiamethoxam, was detected at 0.013 mg/kg against a Codex limit of 0.2 mg/kg — well within safe limits. We say independently tested, all residues within Codex limits. We do not say pesticide-free, because one residue was detected, even though it was within limits.

Kerala Mango Varieties vs Alphonso

Kerala grows excellent mangoes of its own — Muvandan, Priyoor, Chandrakaran, Neelum. These are fibrous, tangy and built for local cooking, pickling and raw eating. Alphonso is none of those things. It is a low-fibre, high-sugar, melt-in-the-mouth dessert mango with a Brix of 18–24° and a shelf-window of roughly five to seven days once fully ripe. It does not grow in Kerala's climate and soil — the laterite and coastal humidity of Konkan, specifically Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, are what produce that combination of sugar, aroma and texture.

Kochi's food-aware population has always known this. The demand for genuine Hapus in the city is real but the local market has historically mixed carbide-ripened Ratnagiri rejects with authentic stock. Ordering directly from a GI Authorised User removes that uncertainty.

Nutrition — What You Actually Get

Ripe Alphonso pulp contains roughly 30–36 mg of vitamin C per 100 g. A 100 g serving meets about 40–45% of the ICMR-NIN 2020 recommended daily intake for adult men (80 mg/day) and about 50% for adult women (65 mg/day). The pulp also contains mangiferin, a xanthonoid studied by Govindappa et al. (2011) for anti-inflammatory activity in cell models.

One honest limit worth stating: Alphonso is a seasonal, perishable fruit with a narrow ripeness window. If you need mango year-round, our Alphonso mango pulp is available outside the fresh season. The pulp is processed at peak Brix and holds the flavour without the transit constraints. But it is not the same experience as eating a just-ripened Hapus over the sink in April.

For anyone gifting to Kochi — 18% of our orders across the platform are gifts — the two-dozen Jumbo box (275–300 g fruit) is what most corporates and family senders choose. You can read our full delivery guide for details on how we handle multi-destination dispatch: mango delivery across India.

Grades run from Small (150–180 g) to Jumbo (275–300 g) — larger fruit costs more per box but fewer per kilogram.

Which place is famous for Alphonso mango?

Ratnagiri and Devgad in Maharashtra's Konkan coast are the two places most closely associated with Alphonso mangoes. Both hold GI No. 139 under India's Geographical Indications Registry. The sea-facing laterite-soil orchards in these districts produce the fruit — called Hapus locally — that sets the benchmark for flavour and Brix across India.

Which Alphonso mango is best in India?

Ratnagiri and Devgad Alphonso are both GI-tagged under GI No. 139 and are considered the best in India. Devgad fruit typically sits at the upper end of the 18–24° Brix range with a firmer texture at dispatch — which suits longer transits like Kochi. Ratnagiri fruit has a slightly softer profile that repeat customers in north India consistently prefer.

Both varieties are sourced from sea-facing orchards in Konkan, hand-harvested without shaking the tree, and independently tested with all residues within Codex limits.
